  • Natural fur. This material is the most expensive, as it is obtained from an animal and not made synthetically. Only experienced seamstresses with extensive experience working with fur products can work with raw materials.

Important! Natural fur is easy to spoil, so before you get to work, carefully weigh your creative powers and skills.

  • Artificial fur. This is the most budget option, which is perfect for beginning needlewomen. Short pile fabrics are easy to cut and sew on a machine. The current market offers big choice artificial analogues of natural fur, which are difficult to distinguish from the real thing, which plays an important role in the formation of an affordable pricing policy.
  • Natural previously used fur. Surely every woman has her mother’s old one at home. mink coat that requires repair, or a coat that has long gone out of fashion. By looking through advertisements and going to a flea market, you can get that very tidbit for a minimal fee.

  • A set of patterns (according to your own standards or examples from the Internet).
  • Accessories - buttons, hooks, clips.
  • Adhesive-based lining tape (to strengthen armholes, sleeves and shoulder seams).
  • A stationery or furrier's knife with a sharp blade.
  • Scissors.
  • Thimble.
  • Long ruler.
  • Gypsy needle.

  • Ballpoint pen for marking.

Sewing a fur coat with your own hands:

  1. We cut out the main parts for the fur coat from the “sampler” fabric, carefully sweep everything away and try it on ourselves. After fitting, we make the necessary adjustments. We check the length of the sleeve and the product itself. We check that all seam allowance marks match and that the hem is hemmed. Now we warm up the “probe”. We have created a pattern for a faux fur coat with our own hands, which we will use to cut out the lining and fur fabric.
  2. For work, we took fur with a pattern, so before the cutting stage we transfer the location of the image to the wrong side using chalk and a long line. We will take these strips into account when creating patterns for faux fur and lining.
  3. We lay out the details of the fur fabric, taking into account the location of the pattern. Don’t forget to transfer the internal details of the hood with a small edge from the shoulder flange pattern. We made a complete layout of all the details on the fur before the cutting process.
  4. We cut the fur with a well-sharpened stationery knife, using it from the wrong side of the canvas. Do not forget to hold the fur with your hand, cutting it into small sections, slightly moving both sides of the fabric. We cut separately the warp threads that did not break initially. We cut out all the details with increases, the chest dart, without cutting off 1 cm from it for the allowance.
  5. We cut out the insulation and lining: we cut out the elements of the back and sleeves according to the fur pattern, and the details of the shelves - minus the hood (if one is available) and the lining. We cut out all the woolen parts, pin them with pins with a lining, stepping back from the edge approximately 2 cm. We cut out the woolen parts with a lining.
  6. Using an overlocker, we process the chipped parts of the insulation and lining around the entire perimeter. We get single parts of an insulated textile lining, the edge of which will no longer crumble.
  7. We baste and stitch the previously marked chest dart on the lining and shelves. Those darts that are on the lining are carefully ironed down.
  8. Since when stitching the fur inevitably gets into the seam, we correct this problem by pulling it out with a gypsy needle. We turn the fur product over to the front side and comb it with a metal comb.
  9. We cut off the excess fur from the inside so that the seam straightens out well. Now our seams look appropriate.
  10. Sweep and grind side seams shelves and back, hood and sleeves. We process the seams in the same way as in the case of darts.
  11. We sew together the details of the lining shelf with fur trims for the hood. We baste and machine sew the side seams of the back, hood and shelves. We process the seams on the back with a gypsy needle, scissors and a comb. Carefully iron all side seams on the textile lining.
  12. We sew the shoulder seams, and then process the inner and outer seams using the above steps.
  13. Sew the lining sleeve to the side armhole. We perform similar manipulations with the second sleeve.
  14. We sew the neckline with the hood on a sewing machine.
  15. We put the lining in the fur product, and then try it on. Shoulder pads can also be included if desired.
  16. Baste and stitch the lining to the fur. We process the lower edges of the sleeves, securing them with a blind seam in one hem. Sew the shoulder pads to the textile lining.
  17. We sew the lining with fur fabric around the perimeter.
  18. We turn the sewn fur coat inside out through the hole located on the seam of the sleeve.
  19. We turn the sleeves with the hole inside out, and then sew it up with a hidden seam.
  20. Sew fastener buttons (buttons can be used).

A DIY faux fur coat is ready to please its happy owner!

If you want to sew a fur coat from natural fur, then it won’t hurt you to familiarize yourself with some of the nuances:

  • It is almost impossible to find absolutely identical paintings. That is why it is very difficult to choose the correct location of the skins so that the product appears solid, without bald spots or joints. To do this, fur should only be handled by a professional or a very experienced seamstress.
  • Don’t be sure that by cutting off the sleeves from an old fur coat, you will make a beautiful vest. All parts need to be cut out and worn areas replaced.
  • The basic rule for sewing any fur clothing is that the fur should be directed towards the bottom of the product (pile down).
  • We recommend inserting the best canvases into the most visible parts - in the center of the shelves and back.
  • Do not use scissors to cut natural or artificial fur fabrics. Perform the cutting process not on a wooden surface, but on a plastic surface.
  • Check the suitability of the fur mesh in advance. For example, skins that have been used can tear even at the slightest touch of a needle. It is highly undesirable to use such fabric for sewing a fur coat or vest.
  • If you haven’t found a ready-made pattern on the Internet, then make it yourself, using your well-fitting coat as a basis. Using the diagram for constructing its parts, you can easily make any fur coat.

If you love and know how to sew, then you have probably thought about trying your hand at sewing a fur coat. Many do not dare to do this, fearing that, without having a special sewing machine, tools and extensive experience in working with fur, they can make mistakes. But not everything is as complicated as it might seem. You just need to carefully study cutting techniques, material layout, and methods of stitching artificial or natural fur. As a result, you will be able to sew with your own hands exclusive item, which you dreamed of.

Choosing fur for a fur coat

You can sew a fur coat yourself from either faux fur or natural fur. It all depends on your personal preferences and capabilities. After all, natural fur will cost more, and it will be more difficult to find it on sale. And the pattern of a fur coat made from natural and artificial fur is almost identical.

Natural fur

When choosing natural fur for sewing, think carefully about whether you can cut a fur coat out of it with your own hands. This process still requires some experience.

With natural fur you will have to tinker a little more:

  • choose shades of fur pieces;

  • take into account the height of the pile on each individual part;
  • cut correctly in the direction of the pile;
  • cut parts efficiently without touching the pile itself;
  • Place the largest pieces on the shelves and back of the product.

It is the ability to put together individual skins into a worthy product that sets the master apart from others. A specialist will be able to do this in such a way that the fur coat looks solid.

Artificial fur

Sewing a fur coat from faux fur according to a pattern is somewhat easier than from natural fur. The cost of the material is affordable, and the choice is large. A faux fur coat will look no worse than a mink coat. Moreover, you will sew it with your own hands and exactly to your taste and size.

The model can be absolutely any:

  • trapezoid,
  • with a stand-up collar,
  • with a hood.

You should work with faux fur just as carefully as with natural fur. Cut the parts only along the fabric base, carefully trying not to touch the pile, and follow its direction while cutting the parts.

The faux fur coat pattern is based on the coat pattern.

Stages of constructing a fur coat pattern

You can take yours already ready-made pattern coat, take it from a free source, or build it to your own standards.

Patterning a fur coat from faux fur with your own hands or from natural fur is similar in the following:

  • the direction of the fur pile of each cut piece is the same;
  • parts from two parts should mirror each other;
  • the drawing is completely identical in detail;
  • We do not cut the pile, only the base of the fur.

Uncover

  1. We model the back and shelves depending on the fur coat model you choose: with a hood or with a stand-up collar. If you have a coat pattern according to your parameters, you can use it. Back – 1 piece, shelves – 2 pieces.
  2. We are building a sleeve pattern - 1 piece. Most often it is made single-seam, straight or slightly flared. The flared sleeve looks great on a trapezoid-shaped fur coat.
  3. Cut out the stand-up collar or hood – 2 parts.

Lining

Make the lining for your fur coat using the same pattern that you made for the top of the product. For insulation, the lining fabric is quilted in the form of any pattern with batting or woolen fabric. It is not recommended to use padding polyester for this purpose.

The lining with insulation for the sleeves is not quilted.

After you have cut out all the parts, you should baste the top and lining separately, stitch and sew them together.

An important point - dubbing

Often the basis of faux fur is knitted material. Although it is sealed with special glue, it still has the property of stretching. Therefore, it is imperative to strengthen the most worn areas of the product - the shoulder, sprout, pockets, and the hem of the fur coat.

If you are sewing from natural fur, such as mink, then the dubbing should be made even denser. This guarantees the product excellent durability for many years without the need for repairs.

At the bottom of the sleeves and at the bottom of the product, individual parts of the collar or hood should be duplicated with non-woven fabric.

Never use an iron when working with any fur.

As you can see, the pattern of a faux fur coat with or without a hood is not so difficult. But you need to be careful when arranging the material and have patience.
