How to sew a prom dress with your own hands. Do-it-yourself graduation dress for kindergarten How to start sewing a graduation dress

Schoolchildren and their parents (mostly mothers) begin preparing for the prom almost from the beginning of their senior year. And if the guys take this evening more or less calmly, then the girls almost begin to experience “pre-wedding jitters.” The main part of the worries concerns, of course, dressing for prom.

Do you think girls who are about to graduate in kindergarten, behave somehow differently? No matter how it is! Little fashionistas are even more capricious than almost adult girls and choose ball gowns with the same pickiness.

And if high school girls are more or less independent, then all responsibility for preparing the girl for the kindergarten graduation party falls on the mother’s shoulders. The parent will have to think over the image for her daughter and take care of all the small details of the outfit. Decide, in the end, to sew a dress for prom in kindergarten yourself or buy all the toiletries at, frankly, a considerable price.

There is one more important point. Every mother has a choice festive dress for my daughter’s graduation in her own way. Some are guided solely by their own taste preferences, others try to involve graduates in this process, discussing all the nuances with them.

Sewing a prom dress: pros, steps

Fashion for evening and elegant dresses is changing. However, some trends are stable, especially for children's holiday bows. 2017 is no exception. Therefore, many mothers, who have a rough idea of what their daughter should wear to her kindergarten graduation, try to sew the outfit themselves.

It's profitable and not as difficult as it might seem. In addition, a hand-sewn dress is a guarantee of exclusivity. The outfit will be unique, and there will be no risk of encountering a similar dress on another girl.

Where do you start sewing a prom dress?

1. The first step in creating a formal look is choosing a dress style. The scope for imagination here is almost limitless. The main thing is that the dress looks good on the figure, is beautiful and pleases the hero of the occasion. Adult women are more sophisticated in these matters, so the starting point for choosing a suitable dress for a matinee on such a special occasion should still be the child’s individual characteristics. That is, the outfit needs to be chosen so that the graduate feels comfortable in it, the image suits her and matches her temperament.

You can opt for a ball gown with a complex cut, multi-layered full skirt, train, etc. or take a closer look at more sophisticated and elegant models with a minimum amount of complex details and decor. Both options are relevant. You can also sew a more practical dress with your own hands, which the girl can wear after graduation to other, less formal events.

2. After determining the style, you need to move on to choosing fabric.

3. Now you can make a pattern on paper, cut the fabric and start sewing. All stages of the process must be performed carefully and with soul. Be careful with fabrics that fray. The edges of dress parts made from such fabric must be tucked and overcast so that the threads do not unravel.

To sew a long ball gown for a kindergarten graduation, you will need considerable sewing skills and some dexterity. Plus jewelry, the creation of which also requires experience. Therefore, if a girl really wants to dress up for the last matinee in the garden in a princess dress, she needs to start sewing it in advance so that there is enough time for everything.

We create a custom design without sewing

Your daughter will not see a similar product on another girl, which is important for maintaining Have a good mood and individuality.

Preparatory stages

Before sewing a dress for kindergarten graduation, you need to think carefully about the preparatory stages.

Choosing a dress style

This is the first thing you need to think about. The choice is quite large, so you should include all your imagination and creative ideas. The most important thing here is to sew not only a beautiful, but also a comfortable outfit that will be in trend and will please the hero of the occasion.

When choosing a style, you should place more emphasis on the features of the figure, appearance and comfort of the product. So, for example, for a graduation dress for kindergarten, the criterion of comfort is very important - your princess should move freely in the dress with her own hands. You can opt for a ball gown or a piece with a corset and a multi-layered tulle skirt. These two options are equally valid.

Important! You can sew a prom dress with your own hands, which will be useful not only for the special event, but also after the holiday. Such practical option will kill “two birds with one stone” at once: it will help you out children's party and will save you from sewing a new outfit for your next event.

Fabric selection

Once you have decided on the style, you should move on to choosing the fabric for your dress. What fabric should I use to make a prom dress? In this case, start from the desired model of the outfit, since the selection of material and accessories depends on it. Eg:

  • For light, airy and delicate sewing Greek dress you need to take flowing fabrics: silk, chiffon, polyester.
  • In order to make a full skirt, you will need tulle.
  • For creating ball gowns and long, voluminous dresses - brocade, satin, fabrics with shiny lurex, cotton with elastane.

In addition to the fabric, you need to prepare elements for decoration: beads, beads, sequins, rhinestones, lace, bows, artificial flowers, appliques.

Important! Don’t forget to decate (wet and iron) the fabric before starting to create the pattern. This is necessary so that after the first wash the material does not shrink the product. If you use silk to sew a dress, then it will be enough to soak it in warm water with a tablespoon of vinegar. Such work does not allow it to lose color and original density. Then you will need to lightly wring out the silk with your hands, dry it a little and iron it at minimum temperature on the wrong side. Keep in mind that dry satin or silk should not be exposed to water, which leaves behind stains that can be removed by repeated washing.

Pattern

To sew almost any dress, you will need a pattern that will allow you to avoid mistakes and alterations during the entire work and after its completion. Having measured the parameters of the model and put them on the pattern, taking into account all the allowances, you can safely start cutting out the material and start sewing. Be extremely careful when creating the style of your outfit, as it will be very difficult for you to correct your mistakes later.

Important! The edges of “loose” fabrics should be processed (turned and stitched or an overlock stitch) before sewing the seams to avoid unraveling of the threads.

DIY kindergarten graduation dress - master class

Let's look at a simple sewing option lush outfit for a gala event. Every mother can sew such a dress, regardless of your knowledge and experience in working with patterns and cutting. All you need is a little imagination, available materials and tools.

Materials and tools:

  • Fabric for the dress to choose from.
  • Fabric for the petticoat (chiffon, silk, mesh).
  • Wide elastic mesh to match the color of the product.
  • Small artificial flowers.
  • Wide satin ribbon matching the tone of the elastic mesh.
  • Taffeta (one shade darker than the wide elastic band).
  • Threads to match the color of the main fabric, elastic.
  • Thick inserts for sewing a belt.
  • Elements for decoration.

The length of the fabric directly depends on the chosen style of dress. We recommend sewing an outfit middle length, reaching to the middle of the calf. This is the most optimal and convenient option. In such clothes, your girl will be as comfortable and safe as possible, which cannot be said about a long dress with a train.

Important! The elastic mesh will be the top part of the dress with a full skirt.

We sew a fluffy petticoat and lower part

Cut out a rectangular piece of lining fabric:

  1. We collect the material on top with an elastic band.
  2. We sweep, pin and try on the petticoat on the model, threading it through the legs.
  3. We trim the lower part of the petticoat with thick tulle or organza.
  4. Fold the fabric in half and then sew the edges to give the lining more fluff and volume.

We sew up dresses:

  1. We stretch the elastic mesh using cardboard.
  2. We divide the taffeta into equal strips, which we fold in half to create a bend.
  3. We thread the taffeta in a checkerboard pattern into special holes in the wide elastic band in 3-4 rows (depending on the width of the selected elastic mesh).
  4. We insert each strip with an existing bend into the holes of the elastic band. We tie the ends of the taffeta with an elastic band. We perform similar actions along the entire diameter of the elastic band and with all other strips.
  5. We attach artificial flowers to the top of the outfit, threading them through the elastic holes on the chest.
  6. We pass a satin ribbon along the edge of the upper part of the product from the front and back, cutting it off at the shoulders. The satin ribbon will serve as straps for our dress, so before cutting it, do not forget to take into account the required length for tying it into a bow.

That's all the work! The dress is ready for the grand entrance!

Two-tone dress

Now you will learn the skill of how to sew a prom dress with your own hands for a young graduate. To sew this style, we used two colors - gray and rich pink, which will blend smoothly, thereby creating the illusion of using one piece of fabric.

Materials and tools:

  • Fabric with coupon gray and Pink colour(length 1.3 meters, standard width per roll 1.4 meters).
  • Petticoat lining.
  • Sewing needle.
  • Threads to match.
  • Tailor's pins.
  • Scissors.
  • Needles for chopping.
  • Thin elastic for forming a series of loops.
  • Set for covering buttons.
  • Wide grosgrain ribbon to match the dress.
  • Sewing machine.

Important! For our outfit we will sew a tatyanka skirt, consisting of two rectangular pieces of fabric gathered at the waist line. The width of each piece is the standard width of the canvas - 1.4 meters. In a word, the width of our entire fluffy skirt is 2.8 meters.

Sewing:

  • Due to the fact that we used fabric with a coupon for work, we leave it for sewing a skirt for a dress. To do this, take fabric with a pronounced pattern and cut it off, adhering to the upper and lower boundaries. The result was a wide rectangular strip of fabric with a pattern. Let's put it aside for now. We'll deal with it at the very end.
  • We fold the material back to back, pin it together, and sweep it away.
  • We sew the side seams of the tatyanka skirt with a French seam.
  • There will be a zipper on the left side of our product. So, to connect it with a French seam, we make a small notch at the end of the fastener in the allowance area.

Important! If you have “loose” fabric, do not forget to glue the cut area with non-woven material. In our case, we simply draw a line to the edge of the material at the very end of the zipper, trimming the increases to 5 mm.

  • We fold the fabric face to face, ironing the side seam so that the previously made allowances remain between the fabric. Now we stitch the seam, retreating 7 mm from the edge. We got a seam without overlocking, with hidden allowances inside the seam.
  • Iron the seam allowances to the side. Just in case, we glue the extensions under the zipper with an adhesive strip.
  • We go in a zigzag along the upper part of the skirt so that the cut cannot unravel during wearing. We lay two lines in a row with a wide stitch along the upper part of the skirt, tighten them well, and evenly distribute the resulting gathering along the entire waist. Our skirt is almost ready.
  • We choose a suitable pattern for sewing such an airy skirt. For example, we make mock-ups of the top of the outfit using three patterns and try them on together with the skirt. We chose a bustless bodice with two vertical bottom darts.
  • We adjust the bodice layout to the figure of our little model. Using it we cut out the details of the top and lining of the dress. We glue the allowances with a thin adhesive strip.
  • We sew the seams of our bodice with the same seams as in the case of the skirt (French). We sew the left side 5 cm from the armholes, since we will sew in the zipper a little lower. We reinforce the allowances with non-woven fabric. Trim the seam allowance at the beginning of the fastener to create a French seam above the level of the zipper.
  • We make a cutout on the back. We bend the side parts of the back along the central seam, thereby forming a V-shaped neckline. We strengthen the fold with a glue strip and trim the details of the back of the dress, leaving an allowance of 1.5 cm from the edge.
  • We decorate the back with a beautiful clasp with eyelets and textile buttons of the same color as our dress. As a fastener, we used a series of loops with buttons to create a royal image. In order to simplify your task, you can use a more simplified version - a zipper.
  • We cover the bodice with a thick lining and sew the shoulders of our dress.
  • We put the upper front part into the previously made skirt, carefully chop and sweep everything together.
  • We put on the dress and tie the waist with an elastic band. Place the waist line along the bottom edge of the narrow elastic band. We do this so that the waist lies evenly horizontally. We baste the skirt to the elastic strictly according to the intended markings.
  • We sew the bodice to the skirt, and along the edge of the allowance we put another additional stitch, which will make it easier to process the edge of the allowance.
  • We iron the increases with gathering. Overcast the horizontal seam allowances along the waistline. We remove all landing lines.
  • Sew the fastener into the left side seam. Baste the seam, align it at the waist, press the seam allowances.
  • Iron the clasp until it fits well. We pin it on the extensions so that the lock comes out at the beginning of the zipper cut, and the teeth are located exactly along the intended seam. We sew the fastener along its two sides, first tucking in the sides of the fabric cut.
  • Unzip the zipper and sew it on sewing machine, carefully removing the fastener lock onto the front side of our skirt.
  • We fold the bodice lining underneath to pin it with a slight slouch.
  • Sew the lining around the fastener and along the waist using a hand blind stitch. We got a beautiful back with no overlock seams. The zipper is hidden by the lining and edged at the bottom.
  • We sew the bottom of the dress. We take one rectangular piece of tulle in our hands (you can take a dense mesh), cut out a rectangle from it, form gathers on top, pin it together, baste it and sew it on a sewing machine.
  • We perform similar manipulations with a rectangular piece of fabric with a coupon (pattern).
  • Sew the top of the dress to the lining, basting and stitching the seam along the top edge at the waist line.
  • We sew a 4 cm wide grosgrain ribbon to the horizontal waist line using a sewing machine, leaving the edges free for tying the belt into a bow.

Important! A similar belt can be made from tulle, or used already ready product, matching the color of our outfit.

The DIY kindergarten graduation dress is completely ready!

But the question immediately arises about what is the best way to purchase a dress: buy it in a salon, order it from an atelier, or sew it yourself. The question is not easy, and largely depends on the preferences and finances of the future owner of the dress.

How to choose the perfect prom dress? What should you consider when choosing it? What criteria are used to determine whether a dress is suitable or not? Everything is not so complicated, and all questions have answers that will help you choose the perfect dress.

Prom dresses for the spring-summer 2017 season: what to look for?

First of all, you should be aware of current fashion trends. Then choosing a dress is much easier. Dresses with trains are popular this season and are an elegant, luxurious option for a prom. Fashionable in the spring-summer 2017 season are dresses with a fish silhouette, which are mainly intended for special occasions. Multilayer dresses made from various materials. This dress will help create a playful, flirty look. A very elegant and fashionable outfit for prom is a dress with a full skirt. At the same time, the fullness of the skirt, the color of the dress and the material can be very different. Dresses with asymmetrical tops are also at the peak of popularity, as are bandage dresses.

Do not forget about the features of the figure. If your figure has a full bottom (the hip circumference exceeds the chest circumference), then you should choose floor-length dresses. If, on the contrary, the top “outweighs”, the body proportions should be visually equalized, which means that gathers and draperies on the skirt at the waist are acceptable. In general, you should consider your body shape when choosing a prom dress. If everything is in order with the figure, there are no significant flaws or disproportionate parts - the dress can be any style, depending on individual preferences. No less fashionable option For prom, what a dress is is a stylish jumpsuit. With the right shoes and accessories, your look can be elegant and luxurious.

Fashionable colors and popular fabrics for prom dresses 2017

When choosing a prom dress, you should consider fashionable colors and shades of the current season. In 2017, all shades of sea colors are especially popular, lilac tones, delicate pink, powdery, bright green and sunny yellow colors.

What fabric is best to make a dress for prom 2017? The choice is quite wide.

  • First of all, it's chiffon. Light, weightless, translucent fabric will make you feel like an airy nymph, smoothly soaring in the air.
  • Secondly, the atlas. What's a prom without a satin dress? An elegant, chic satin dress attracts admiring glances with its brilliance and sensuality of the image.
  • Thirdly, silk. Silk is an amazing fabric. It is distinguished by smoothness and natural shine. Silk dresses will look discreet but elegant.

But if you have a preference for a different fabric for sewing a dress, you don’t have to adhere to fashion trends.

Difficult choice: buy a prom dress, order it from a studio or sew it yourself?

Each of these methods has its pros and cons.

  • Sewing a dress yourself: pros - everything is decided independently, from choosing fabric to adding any details, cons - painstaking work, it’s not a fact that it will turn out as neatly as in a store or atelier.
  • To sew to order in an atelier: advantages - you don’t need to do anything except a few fittings and receiving a finished dress, disadvantages - the seamstress may not fully understand what is required of her, the end result may not correspond to what is desired, sewing a dress to order is not cheap.
  • Buying a prom dress in a store or salon: pros - you just need to come and buy, you can try on as many dresses as you want, cons - you can’t always find exactly what you want.

The main advantage of the “sew it yourself” option is that this will be the only copy of the dress, which was made according to an individual sketch; you can choose any fabric, any decoration, anything you like. It’s also a good way to save on seamstress work, since everything will be sewn by hand, yourself. As you can see, there are pros and cons to each option. The choice always remains with the person who needs this dress.

How to sew a prom dress yourself

First of all, you should decide on the style of the dress. If the choice is made (taking into account the type of figure and other features), then comes the choice of the fabric from which the dress will be sewn. In order for the dress to turn out well and well-made, you should choose not the most complex models and patterns. There are many dresses with a fairly simple pattern.

Before you start sewing, you should take your measurements. You can look or find information on the Internet about how to do this correctly. Everything will be described there down to the details. The main thing is not to try to fit into the values a smaller volume than it actually is. In the end, this will play a cruel joke, and the dress simply won’t fit, as it will be too small.

When all the measurements have been taken, you can start creating the pattern. In this matter, you should show maximum accuracy and concentration. The required pattern can be found on the Internet, on specialized sewing websites or in sewing magazines. Don't know how to make patterns? Then pay attention to. After making the pattern and checking the accuracy of the drawings printed on the fabric, you should start cutting. We described in detail how to prepare the fabric and cut out the parts in this article.

The details are cut out, you can move on to manual basting and fitting. All good? Then you can take out your sewing machine and get to work. You should sew carefully, slowly, since the sewing machine does not tolerate fuss and haste. In addition, prom dress fabrics are not easy to process. You will definitely need information on how to work with, and.

After the first stitch on the sewing machine, you should put on the dress, look at the shortcomings, take them into account and sit down to work on the detailed design of the outfit. After this is done, all seams should be overlocked so that the threads do not fray. Next comes the final stage of work on the prom dress - cutting off all excess threads and decorating the dress with stones, painting, beads, rhinestones, and so on, if necessary.

After the final fitting and confidence that the dress is made perfectly and is ready for prom, the work is finished.

What's the result?

Sewing a prom dress yourself is not that difficult. With great desire and perseverance, you can sew a beautiful dress, even if this is your first experience in sewing.

Graduation evening is an equally important and exciting moment. But not everyone decides to take on sewing a prom dress. And in vain. It's not as scary as it seems.

We will show how, based on a simple summer pattern, model 108 from, you can sew an elegant version, just by adding some finishing elements borrowed from and.

The most important thing that will turn an ordinary dress into an elegant one is, of course, the fabric. Her choice should be approached responsibly. Elegant fabrics include natural silk and. Chiffon makes lovely flowing dresses, but it is not so easy to work with. If you don’t have enough experience, it’s better to pay attention to silk. It can be different - smooth satin and rough crepe, thin and denser.

Of dense silks, silk taffeta looks noble and holds its shape well. It’s pleasant to work with, it doesn’t slip when cutting and sewing, it doesn’t fidget under the foot, it lies well in folds, so even not very advanced seamstresses can handle it. You just need to know some of the features of working with silk. These rules apply to any silk, not just taffeta.

What do you need to know when working with silk?

Firstly

You need to choose the right threads. Silk and are delicate fabrics, so you need to take high-quality threads - thin and durable.

If you took silk threads, be sure to check them for strength! The threads should not be easily torn by hand. There are many viscose or silk threads on sale now, but they may be for embroidery rather than sewing. And embroidery threads cannot withstand the load in the seams when worn and can burst.

Premium threads that are good for working with silk are German brands Madeira No. 140 and Guttermann. Although they are synthetic, 100% polyester, they go well with silk.
Guttermann Tera 180 threads are also well suited for chiffon. They are thinner than universal threads and are intended for overcasting, but they are also well suited for sewing in terms of thickness and strength. The reel contains 2000 m, which lasts a long time. You can unwind it on bobbins and put it on both the machine and the overlocker. These threads make a wonderful thin, narrow and very delicate rolled seam for finishing the edges of wide skirts or frills.

Secondly

A good tool helps a lot when working with delicate fabrics. This is, for example, silk scissors. They have one blade along the cutting edge with notches. These notches prevent the fabric from slipping, resulting in a more precise cut.

In addition, there are special pins. They are very thin, with sharp tips and glassy little round red heads. Such heads do not melt under the iron, and the pins do not leave marks or snags on the silk.

Delicate fabrics you need to sew with thinner needles. The thinner the fabric, the thinner the needle. As a rule, these are needles No. 60−70.

There are also Microtex needles, they have a special, more sharpened tip that easily pierces the fabric, puncture marks from such a needle are less noticeable, and the needle does not make cuts.

Well, the basic rule is that when working with expensive fabric, it is better to use a new needle so that the dull tip does not catch the threads of the fabric in the seam.

Fabric is a must before sewing!

It is better to soak the silk in warm water, perhaps with a tablespoon of vinegar. This will prevent it from losing color or fading. Then the fabric must be wrung out by hand, without twisting too much, dried and ironed from the inside out while it is still slightly damp. It is better not to rub or twist satin silks, but to wring them out in a towel.

Dry silk should not get droplets of water, otherwise stains may remain. If stains do appear, you will have to wet the entire piece of fabric again.

If you have satin silk without elastane, then it is better to cut it crosswise to avoid thinning out the seams when worn. Or you need to glue all the seams with thin glue before sewing them down.

Silk taffeta dress

Fabric with coupon passing from gray to rich pink. On long dress it took two coupons of 1.3 m each. A total of 2.7 m of fabric was used with a width of 1.4 m.

So, let's start sewing the dress.

Step 1

The coupon greatly limited the choice of style, so it was decided to leave the richest part of the coupon for the skirt. We cut it off first.

The Tatyanka skirt consists of two rectangular pieces gathered at the waist. The width of each panel is the width of a piece of fabric - 1.4 m. That is, the width of the entire skirt was 2.8 m.

Step 2

Graduation is coming soon. Oh, how the graduates want to be the best, the most beautiful, the most original, the most noticeable! And parents of graduates have a headache: how can they not go broke on their daughters’ desires? I suggest making a simple and original prom dress yourself.

The emphasis in this dress is on COLOR! It is the combination of three classic colors: white, black and red that makes it so unique. And also flirty peas. When I saw this fabric, I simply could not move away from it.

For such a dress you need fabric for the skirt equal to two lengths of the skirt in finished form. For the petticoat: two lengths of black tulle, for the bodice: 40 cm of white satin, for the belt and flowers: 50 cm of red satin. Threads of three colors and adhesive interlining for a 40 cm belt. The cost of all the fabric cost no more than $20

Let's start with the underskirt and overskirt.

To avoid unnecessary thickness petticoat at the waist, I decided to make it fit in the waistband and gather it at the bottom with a fluffy frill. You need to sew tulle very carefully. I made four darts along the waistline: two in the front, two in the back.

She placed the belt of the underskirt on a thin strip of alas and made simple ties on the side. Along the line side seam processed the cut.

Here is the finished skirt.

Now it's time for the overskirt. I cut the fabric of the overskirt into two strips and sewed them on the sides. I laid two parallel lines on the machine along the top edge (this is to make neat gathers by pulling the two bottom threads at the same time). Like this:

I folded the bottom of the skirt twice and stitched it.

We make the bodice of the dress like this: you need to cut the parts for the front and back, measuring down the height of the finished bodice plus seam allowances.

The front needs to be folded. To do this, measure out pieces of fabric equal to three centimeters. Let's add folds. The first fold in the center is counter, the subsequent ones fall on it.

It turns out like this:

The top of the bodice was treated with a facing, cutting it to the shape of the bodice and gluing it onto adhesive interlining for rigidity.

I sewed on the facing and, turning it to the wrong side, sewed the seam. Thin straps were inserted between the seams connecting the facing and the bodice. I inserted a hidden zipper into the middle seam of the bodice.

The bodice and overskirt need to be connected. Sew elastic onto this seam from the inside out.

Proyas. Two strips 10 centimeters wide plus seam allowances must be glued with adhesive interlining and stitched around the perimeter, leaving part of the seam unstitched.

Through this hole, turn the belt right side out and stitch along the edge with a finishing stitch. I added thin stripes of trim along the waistband; I thought it looked prettier.
