Papier-mâché panel painting using the paper art technique. Papier-mâché: all the secrets of working in this technique Mk picture from papier-mâché

This article will focus on one of the unusual and original techniques for creating crafts - papier-mâché. Using simple tricks and simple materials, very beautiful little things are created - vases, caskets, masks and theater props, interior decoration items such as lamps, dolls, photo frames and much more.

French papier-mâché can be translated like torn paper. Actually, the meaning is already revealed in the name. All crafts are formed from paper fibers with the addition of various adhesives.

Although the name of the technique is French, it came to us from ancient China - the birthplace of paper. During excavations, archaeologists discovered armor with multilayer varnished, dated to the III century BC. These original products were strong enough to withstand a sliding cutting blow and had a very low weight, which was an advantage in battle. Later, this art appeared in Japan and Persia, where in this way they made various crafts for the holidays, for example, masks. Since the mid 17th century, this technique has become very popular in Europe.

For those who are just mastering crafts from papier-mâché, it will be important to learn three ways to create them.

First, you will need a basis for crafts. It can then be removed from under the layers of paper or left.

The first method is as follows: the first layer - wet paper pieces are covered with glue, another layer of paper is applied to it and again covered with glue. There can be more than a hundred such layers. This process is called mashing. You can choose a special glue, it is sold in needlework stores or made independently from starch, flour and PVA. If according to the plan the form needs to be taken out, then it must first be greased with a fat cream or petroleum jelly.

The second way - the product is created from paper pulp mixed with glue. There are several recipes for creating such a mixture. The main principle remains soaking paper pieces in water and mixing them with glue. The resulting mass can be molded or applied to the base.

The base form can be wooden, plastic, glass or plastic products.

The third option for creating papier-mâché crafts is similar to making plywood. Pieces of cardboard are treated with glue and pressed.

After drying, products can be putty-coated, sanded, primed and, after final drying, painted, glued various decorative elements or painted.

Papier-mâché vases

Such a wonderful element of room decor, like a vase, many underestimate and consider them unnecessary. But a vase correctly selected in color and shape will certainly become an exquisite touch in the design of the room, will make an additional emphasis on the style of the room. According to the teachings of Feng Shui, vases accumulate positive Qi energy, which has a beneficial effect on the energy of the house. A do-it-yourself vase, not only will become a decoration of the room, it will carry a piece of positive creative energy of the creator.

Papier mache vase in the technique of mashin

To create a papier-mâché vase you will need:

  • Base for a vase (in this master class a glass vase);
  • Newspapers
  • Paper bags (you need rough paper, you can use packaging);
  • PVA glue;
  • Sharp knife;
  • Artificial (synthetic) brush;
  • Acrylic paint or primer;
  • Paints for the final coating;
  • A piece of sponge;
  • Decoration elements;
  • Vaseline.

So, let's get started. First you need to lubricate the glass base with petroleum jelly, this will prevent the layers from sticking to the base.

We cut the newspaper and paper into pieces. You can break it. Now we take the glue, if necessary, part it with water so that it is not too thick. We cover our base with layers, alternating a layer of newspapers and a layer of wrapping paper. This is necessary so that the coating is uniform. You will see if you miss the site somewhere. A minimum of 6 layers must be made.

Now we wait until it dries completely. It takes patience - it can dry for a long time.

When you finally wait, make several cuts along the workpiece with a knife (see photo).

Carefully pull the base out of the paper cocoon. The places of cuts are glued with masking tape or ordinary tape. Now the blank must be glued with paper in one layer and again wait for complete dryness.

We cover with a primer or white paint. When dry, paint again, this time in the color that you like, well, or corresponds to the idea. Dry again.

Getting to the decor. In this master class, the lower part of the vase is decorated with a rough rope. Do not forget to glue part of the vase for decoration.

Now we paint the winding from the rope with a sponge. Our vase is ready.

Clay papier mache vase

You will need:

  • Flour ¾ cup;
  • Toilet paper 1 roll;
  • PVA glue;
  • Mixer;
  • Cling film;
  • Balloons (for the basics).

Unroll the toilet paper, put it in a container and pour plenty of water for about 20 minutes. Then we drain the water, tear the paper into pieces.

We prepare an adhesive solution. It is necessary to mix 1 part of glue, 3 parts of water (there will be about 1 glass) + ¾ glass of flour. Add this to the paper and mix until smooth. It is more convenient to use a mixer.

From the obtained raw materials we form a cake. Inflate the ball or fill it with water. Now cover with our cake no less than half. Leave the tail of the ball free of mass. Of course, the ball must be lubricated so that the mass does not adhere tightly to it. Use cream or petroleum jelly.

We put our blank on plastic wrap and tightly wrap. Now you need to tighten the ends of the film. We make the shape more spherical.

Leave the workpiece to dry completely. Blow off the ball, paint at will and make beautiful compositions with small vases.

In the following craft two types of decorative and applied art were combined - papier-mâché technique and decoupage.

Papier mâché plate

This craft will be an excellent decorative element for the kitchen or dining room. Just pick the colors and pictures that match the decor of the room.

You will need:

  • Glass plate base;
  • Toilet paper 1 roll;
  • PVA glue and wallpaper (already liquid);
  • A piece of gauze;
  • Vaseline or something greasy (to lubricate the base);
  • Putty;
  • White gouache;
  • Water color paints;
  • Napkin with a picture (for your taste);
  • Gel contour of gold color (or any other decor elements);
  • Clear nail polish.

Advice! If you need putty in your work, it will be cheaper to buy it in a hardware store rather than in a handicraft one.

Tear toilet paper into pieces and soak in warm water. Need a couple of hours. The resulting mass must be thoroughly mixed and filtered from excess fluid. You can use gauze.

Add both glue and stir again. For convenience, you can take a mixer. The mass should be very elastic. Roll the ball to sample. If the form holds, then the mass is ready. You can add 1-2 tablespoons of putty.

The base plate from the outside is greased with something bold. Hand cream, petroleum jelly or vegetable oil are suitable.

Cover the plate with our mass and leave until completely dry. Be patient, as this will take quite a lot of time - up to several days.

If there are bumps on the edges after drying, we cut off. We staple our workpiece and again leave until completely dry. We cover with white gouache, thanks to this watercolor paints will fall better. Glue the selected picture from a napkin.

When everything dries again, mix the paints with gouache and color our plate. In this master class, a gold border is applied along the outline of the plate.

Varnish (use a car spray). The plate is ready.

Papier-mâché photo frame

Very often you can find crafts from old car tires or plastic bottles. Garbage was also used for this beautiful frame - cardboard egg trays.

You will need:

  • Egg trays (4 - 5 pcs., Depending on how large the frame you want);
  • PVA glue;
  • Foil or cling film;
  • Base board (you can take a regular chopping board);
  • Mixer;
  • Deep capacity;
  • Gauze;
  • Cutter for internal circuits;
  • Shoelaces (to create an invoice);
  • Gouache.

We take our trays and tear them into small pieces. Put in a deep bowl and pour boiling water. Water should completely cover the paper pieces. Leave to swell until the next day. Of course, time is arbitrary, since the amount of paper you have may vary. Just after a couple of hours, try, if the pieces creep under your fingers, then the mass is ready.

Drain half the liquid. Then we take the mixer and mix everything until smooth. The more we spend on mixing, the better the texture. If you want a rough product structure, beat with a mixer for a short time. In the process of whipping, add a few tablespoons of PVA glue.

We again need to get rid of excess fluid. To do this, put the mass in gauze and put under a press in a colander. A similar method is made cheese or cottage cheese. To find out if the mass is ready, you need to form a small piece. You can pinch it with your fingers or roll a bun. If it holds a shape, then it’s enough to squeeze out moisture, you can create a frame.

We take our base and cover it with foil or cling film. This is necessary so that the mass does not dry tightly to the board.

We roll out a layer of about 1 cm. The main thing is that the layer is equal over the entire surface.

Getting to the formation of the framework. In the center, you need to make a recess for the photo. Choose any shape that you like. For example, a box of cotton buds. Now we place it in the center of the workpiece and gently squeeze 2 - 3 mm. Without removing the mold, cut off the edges of the frame, you can use a ruler and a sharp knife.

Now we need to make our frame textured. To do this, take the lace, fold it and squeeze the spirals on the frame. Depth is about a couple of millimeters. You can draw strokes with a toothpick or a needle.

Now leave for a while to dry the frame. As usual, it takes from several hours to several days.

When the craft is completely dry, paint it. In order to emphasize the texture, it is better to use gouache for painting. When the paint dries completely, it remains only to stick the photo in the center, you can use double-sided tape. On the back side you can glue the mounting leg.

From papier-mâché you can make hundreds of different vases, caskets, plates and other elements of the decor of the room. But you can decorate with crafts from this raw material not only rooms. In the next master class, we will offer to make a mask in the spirit of the Venetian carnival. Due to the sufficient plasticity and harmlessness of the mass, it will be easy to create a mask for yourself, by its standards.

Venetian papier mache mask

You will need:

  • Toilet paper and newspapers;
  • Fat glue or petroleum jelly;
  • PVA glue;
  • Acrylic paints;
  • Elements for decor (lace, feathers, rhinestones, beads, beads, etc.).

We cut or tear the newspaper and toilet paper into strips.

Now the most important thing. The basis for your future mask will be your face. It must be greased with a fat cream or petroleum jelly. In order for the mask to work out well, it is very necessary not to express emotions on the face - not to move eyebrows, not to smile. Keep calm.

We begin to glue a layer of newspaper pieces, greased with glue. If necessary, they can be moistened with water so that they lie as tightly as possible to the face. Alternate a layer of newspaper and a layer of toilet paper. Thanks to this, you will see if you miss a piece somewhere. It takes about 5-6 layers. Try to immediately lay out the form that you want to get the mask.

When finished with layers, take a hair dryer and dry the workpiece directly on the face. As soon as the mask dries, remove and dry naturally. Neatly trim the edges with scissors. Putting the workpiece must be convex side up. Do not forget to make holes for rubber bands or other fasteners.

When the mask is completely dry, cover with acrylic paint on both sides. You can decorate the mask with any details to your taste: feathers, lace, beaded bottoms, rhinestones or beads.

    The word papier-mâché is translated from French as “chewing paper” or “torn paper”. This technique first appeared in France. Trays, toys, snuff-boxes, candlesticks and even decorative stucco work were made from papier-mâché.

    1:928 1:933

    There are two ways to create papier-mâché products.

    1:1040

    The first is sculpting from a moldable mass,  consisting of soft paper and adhesive.

    The second is gluing torn paper in layers., this type is also called mashin.

    The papier-mâché technique is not at all complicated, but it requires accuracy and patience. The manufacturing process of the conceived gizmo may take several days due to the long drying of the material.

    But the time spent will not be wasted, because as a result, you can create a variety of things with your own hands, such as decorative elements of the interior, caskets, piggy banks, figurines, masks, dolls, rattles and much more.

    Papier-mâché, often combined with decoupage technique. Such a union makes it possible to create truly true masterpieces.

    6:4949 7:503 7:508

    The first way - modeling from the mass

    Typically, newspaper sheets are used to make the mass, but this is not important, you can use toilet paper, paper towels.

    We tear newspaper sheets or cut them into small pieces, put them in a deep vessel and fill them with water. It is best to use the mixer, grinding in small portions. But you can do it yourself, for this, pour torn paper with hot water and leave it to soak for about 3 hours.

    Then knead with your hands until a homogeneous mass is obtained. Excess water should be filtered through a sieve, and a mixture of glue and paste should be added to the resulting thickener. Knead until it starts to stick a little to your hands.

    If not used at a time, you can store in a cool place for several days, you can not freeze. During storage, the mass may become liquid, in which case wring it out and add glue.

    The mass is prepared with glue and paste, because when using only glue, it is difficult to sculpt, and one paste does not give the necessary strength. To increase the strength, you can add small sawdust.

    A paste for mass can be prepared as follows:

    mix flour and water in a ratio of 1: 3, mix thoroughly so that there are no lumps.

    Put on fire, and stirring continuously to bring to a boil.

    Then remove from heat and let cool.

    The paste is stored in the refrigerator for several days, tightly wrapped with plastic wrap.

    Paint the product with tempera, alkyd or oil paint. Gouache and watercolor are not suitable, due to the fact that they get dirty and erased.

    For greater durability of gouache, a little PVA glue is added to it. Cover the painted product with colorless varnish. Before painting, the product must be sanded and primed.

    The second way - mash (sticker pieces of paper)

    Mashing is pasting the prepared form with pieces of paper. The paper should be soft, and newspaper sheets are also good for this.

    The most ideal option is mixed pasting:  apply the first layer of colored or white paper, grease the surface with glue, then cover the second, using contrasting paper or newspaper scraps.

    This is used in order not to get confused in the number of layers. In any case, the last layer is necessarily made of white paper. Make at least 8-10 layers.  Every two coats must dry before applying the next two. It is necessary to ensure that the pieces of paper, when pasted, slightly come onto each other, lie flat and do not wrinkle.

    Never use scissors to cut paper., exclusively tear with your hands into small pieces. The edges in this case are thin and smooth out well in the finished product.

    Depending on how papier-mâché was performed,   mashing is internal (glued from the inside) and external (external). If you expect that the pasted shape will remain inside the product, lubricate it before use with glue. But in case of subsequent extraction, cover the form with petroleum jelly or fat cream.

    For mashing, wallpaper glue is very suitable, which can be replaced with a home-made paste.

    The paste is brewed in the same way as in the case of working with mass for papier-mâché, but it can be made as follows:

    starch is diluted with water at room temperature and is stirred until thick sour cream.

    Continuing to mix, boiling water is added in small portions until a clear, thick, jelly-like liquid is obtained.

    After cooling, the paste is ready to work.

    You can’t store it for a long time, it’s better to cook fresh every time.

    Casein glue is also used for work,  which is sold in hardware stores.

    Small details are finished with a mixture of scraps of paper and glue. It must be remembered that when dried, they greatly decrease in size. If this happens, then after complete drying, glue the parts with torn paper to the required size.

    The product dries at room temperature for approximately two days.
      Drying on the battery is contraindicated, as it may crack.

    The finished, completely dried billet must be removed from the mold and treated well with sandpaper, trying to achieve a flat surface. Then prime. To do this, it is better to use a primer on a water or latex basis. The primer is applied with a flat brush. Before applying the next coat, let the previous one dry.

    The completed thing is painted and varnished, as well as the product from the mass for papier-mâché.

    Paperweight paintings. Addition in my collection

    [I bring to your attention new works from papier-mache. There are already winter-themed paintings in my collection, these two are a continuation of the theme started under the title: “Sleigh Rushing” and “Animals on the Ice Rink”. The idea of \u200b\u200bcreation came during the winter holidays, when it was snowing outside the window and the children were noisily playing in the yard. Then I wondered if it would be possible to transfer the seen plot to the canvas of the painting in a sort of fairy-tale style? For additional details, I used egg cells (Christmas trees, corrugated wrappers for pears and ready-made story figures. A little creativity - and the paintings are ready, now they decorate the kindergarten.

    For this craft we need:  acrylic paints, small details for decoration, picture frames, glue, paperweight for papier-mache (you can find the technology for making pulp in my previous publications).

    We cut the egg cells in half and into parts so that they look like a “paw” of spruce

    We prepare the details for the picture

    Fill the frame space and place the details on the clear

    We sculpt the figures and fix them on the surface of the painting by priming

    When the parts are dry, cover everything with white acrylic paint

    Now we paint clearly and varnish

    From the remaining material I made trial samples for spring - vases with flowers

    Hello dear guests of my page! I bring to your attention a master class on making mushrooms using papier-mâché technique.

    Hello everyone, dear friends!

    Today I’ll show you how to make a papier-mâché painting and paper art technique. The picture will be very beautiful and original.

    We will need:

    • A rectangular piece of plywood or fiberboard;
    • PVA glue;
    • Hot glue;
    • Napkins
    • Three-layer napkins;
    • Mass for papier-mâché (see how to make it);
    • Copy paper;
    • Outline drawing (can be printed on a printer);
    • Acrylic paints and varnish.

    Step 1.

    The front surface of plywood or fiberboard, paste with napkins using PVA glue to create a texture surface. Leave to dry.

    Step 2

    We take the outline drawing that we want to see further on the panel picture and with the help of carbon paper we transfer it to the surface of the glued napkins.

    Step 3

    We sculpt the mass of papier-mâché inside the images on napkins (here these are flowers and leaves), creating a three-dimensional picture, carefully removing it along the edges of the contour. Sushim.

    Step 4

    Step 5

    We decorate the middle of the flowers and the ends of the stems with peas, gluing it with PVA glue, thus creating a complete picture, as it were. And with PVA glue, slightly diluted with water, with a brush we pass through the glued flagella from napkins. We leave everything to dry well.

    Step 6

    Now you need to paint the entire image with acrylic paint in the main color (black here). Sushim.

    Step 7

    At this stage, we need to create a patina effect in the picture, for this we cover it with green acrylic paint using the "dry brush" method. Sushim.

    Step 8

    Acrylic paint of bronze color, also by the method of "dry brush", highlight the relief of the image. Leave to dry.

    Step 9

    Now, with the same bronze color paint, light touches of the brush, we colorize our image, namely: flowers, leaves and stems. Dry the paint.

    Step 10

    Here you need to cover our panel picture with acrylic varnish and also let it dry.

    Step 11

    With hot glue, glue the loop on the back of the picture on which it will hang.

    Step 12

    We enclose the picture in a frame and hang it on the wall.

    Look as if the bronze coinage has turned out! Very beautiful and original idea.
