Another example: our baby loves sweets. He cries all the time, begging for candy, and out of sympathy we agree. When the son grows up, he will suffer from tooth decay, excess blood sugar and excess weight.

If we combined compassion with wisdom in these situations, we would act very differently, and our actions would benefit the child. Only wisdom helps us respond correctly to the suffering of others.

If we balance wisdom and compassion through the Buddhist approach to parenting, it will impact more than just our lives and the lives of our children. As parents, we have a unique opportunity to influence people on a larger scale. The method of cultivating Buddha nature can produce such an internal transformation that will bring more peace and tranquility to people, because peace in the outer world is created due to inner peace in people's minds.

In general, peace is not an external phenomenon, but an internal one, and mindfulness combined with impartiality helps to achieve it. Many people think that if they meditate, their mind will come to a state of peace. This is true to a certain extent, but meditation is not only done on a special pillow and in a special position.

Meditation is the ability to remain mindful at different moments of our life. Everyday life. Take washing dishes for example - we can carefully wash the dishes to make them clean, or we can carefully wash the dishes to wash the dishes. Being parents is hard work. One day my father admitted to me that he makes mistakes all the time. I was a teenager at the time, so his statement wasn't surprising, but whatever mistakes he thought he made, he probably did some things right. Today we, his daughters and sons, easily find mutual language. Dad and Mom laid the foundation for this back in our early childhood. Of course, our parents were far from ideal. We probably won’t achieve this in one lifetime, but we can at least start.

The Buddha's teaching primarily explains the situation we find ourselves in now. His means of self-improvement are intended not only for monks and nuns, but also for lay people - that is, parents. These teachings and methods constitute the “wisdom wing” of Buddhism.

The second wing of this bird is sympathy, or compassion. What does it mean to be compassionate to a child when he flies into fits of childish rage or sucks up to you for a coveted toy? In fact, only a few of us are capable of leading an ascetic life in secluded places, but we can all practice the Dharma here and now, no matter who we are or in whatever situation we find ourselves in. Buddhism focuses on personal responsibility for inner development based on a rational, deep and comprehensive attitude towards human life.

This is why the Buddhist approach to partnership and parenting begins with the individual's personal responsibility for his own growth and improvement of the qualities of the mind. It combines skills and strategies with wisdom and compassion to enable you to succeed—both in parenting and in your own development. I call this approach Buddha Heart Parenting (raising children with the revelation of Buddha nature).

I developed this system to provide parents, grandparents, nannies and anyone else who cares for the younger generation with ethical parenting rules based on the Buddhist principles of compassion and love. These methods are simple and easy to use, thanks to them relationships become harmonious, and children grow energetic and self-confident. I gave this name to this system because if we base our care of children on Buddhist philosophy and Buddhist views, we are actually turning to the inherently perfect nature of the mind - Buddha nature. We treat our charges as the Buddha would treat us.

When we understand that all beings have the same inherent nature, that they strive to achieve happiness and avoid suffering, it is easier for us to maintain the appropriate level of compassion and loving-kindness. This common essence is the “motor” inside us that makes us become better, because if we ourselves are useful to others, we are also happy. Of course, sometimes we make mistakes due to inattention, but still, basically, both parent and child try their best.


Dharma - here the Teachings of the Buddha, which includes philosophical knowledge; meditation, that is, practical exercises that develop the mind; and instructions on how to conduct oneself in daily life.

The approach proposed here teaches us to look at the fundamental reasons for human actions - people behave the way they feel.

Every person has a tendency to think about himself first. We tend to believe that other people and our children, by their behavior, “force” us to be angry, offended, and the like. The approach proposed here teaches us to look at the fundamental reasons for human actions - people behave the way they feel. We can bring this understanding into meditation and look at everyone else from this angle: by their behavior, beings express their state of happiness or suffering. This discovery will allow you to remain calm in the midst of conflict by responding with compassion and wisdom.

When we try to figure out why people behave the way they do, we shift the focus away from ourselves and onto them. To begin with, we take a closer look at the behavior of our children and closest relatives, study its reasons, and later we can include the family in its broader sense in our field of observation. Then we expand these boundaries further - we turn to society and to the world, realizing that the immediate cause of the awkward behavior of creatures is their suffering. In this way we develop kindness and love for everyone.

From this love grows compassion, that is, the desire for beings to be free from suffering and its causes. Our meditation on understanding others and developing compassion can be considered successful if we feel towards all living things the same way a mother feels towards her only child when he gets sick. In any situation: while eating, on a walk, and so on, she keeps her sick child in mind, feels his suffering as unbearable for herself and wishes him to get rid of it as soon as possible. This is the feeling we take into our meditation, and it gives parents a unique opportunity to develop compassion.

By awakening our all-encompassing compassion, we can quickly remember that if our children behave incorrectly, then they are suffering. Then we will be able to remain calm and choose the way to respond that will be most useful. Otherwise, our response to children's behavior will cause even more suffering for both them and ourselves.

There are many other Buddhist techniques that can be valuable in situations like this and can help us develop empathy for the child while remaining calm in the midst of family turmoil. Three of them are especially useful and easy to use. One involves understanding that throughout the myriad lives we have spent in different bodies, our children have certainly been our parents. They cared and worried about us as much as we cared about them; Having realized this, we will be able to maintain balance and not succumb to provocation. Another practice suggests imagining that the child is a Buddha who took birth to help us achieve Enlightenment. Finally, we can focus on the Buddha nature and potential inherent in our sons and daughters.

It is extremely useful to use these techniques - not just once, but constantly, especially when we get angry with our children. It is important to remember that without the difficult situations that are often associated with raising offspring, we would not have the opportunity to truly practice the Teachings of the Buddha. Without sand, pearls would not appear.


Enlightenment is the final fruit of Buddhist practice, Buddhahood. Characterized by freedom from suffering, omniscience, fearlessness, joy and boundless compassion for all beings.

The purpose of this book is to make it easier for us to achieve Enlightenment, to awaken the Buddha within us and allow him to guide all our parenting activities. This is what it means to reveal Buddha nature. Thanks to this, family relationships will receive a solid foundation of compassion: it will develop in both parents and children. Through these methods, our clients will have a better chance of realizing their potential and achieving true and lasting happiness.

Sometimes we will read a story to children simply for the sake of reading and enjoying our interaction, and other times the purpose of reading will be to help them learn the alphabet or learn something new. Mindfulness and mindfulness is a clear presence that allows the practitioner to be fully aware of the object on which he is concentrating. It is a distinct and directed state. The Tibetan verb "dran pa" also means "to remember" or "to be fully present."

Having decided what to tackle as carefully and consciously as possible, we are not distracted by other things. This opportunity should be used wisely and compassionately, so that you choose an action that will benefit the children now and over time.

Mindfulness brings peace, which we will spread around us constantly. When we are calm and full of loving kindness, this is passed on to our children. They feel valued. They may learn something new or learn how to behave during and after our fun together.

Peace is available to us when we are able to quiet our distracted or agitated mind and be present in what is. If we managed to achieve this, we are happy and smile. The smile that lights up our face evokes a response in the heart of a child. It relaxes our facial muscles, promotes mindfulness and has a wonderful calming effect on everyone. This feeling of blissful stillness supports us in our parental role.


An enlightened attitude (bodhichitta in Sanskrit) is the decision to achieve Enlightenment and lead all beings to it without exception.

By developing compassion and an enlightened attitude, we gain the power to create an atmosphere of peace and harmony first in the family, then in the wider community, and ultimately wherever we go. This is why cultivating the enlightened attitude, or bodhichitta, is an important part of Buddhist meditation.

If we, in addition, can create an atmosphere of impersonal love in the family, help children also develop empathy and thereby achieve inner harmony, then peace and joy will increase exponentially.

All methods of the Buddhist path contribute to the cultivation of the Enlightened Attitude. It takes us away from focusing on ourselves and therefore frees us from suffering. Using Buddhist methods, we will learn to cultivate bodhichitta in any situation in life.

Some readers will likely be familiar with the basics of Mahayana Buddhist philosophy, while others may not. The overview below will provide the necessary foundation for understanding these truths. The study and practice of Buddhism will benefit everyone; In addition, at the end of the book there is a list of other resources that will give you additional information.


Mahayana, or Great Vehicle, is the second cycle of Buddha’s teachings after Hinayana (Little Vehicle). Hinayana focuses on calming the mind and leads to lesser nirvana, individual liberation from suffering. Mahayana develops compassion and loving kindness, shows the illusory nature of all phenomena of the conditioned world and leads to Enlightenment, Buddhahood.

Broadly speaking, Buddhism is a way of perceiving the world and common sense. We usually have a hard time breaking through to common sense because of ignorance.

Here, by common sense, I mean a reasonable and beneficial lifestyle for everyone. When we free ourselves from the disturbing emotions that arise from ignorance, only the perfect and untainted Buddha nature remains. Sometimes I prefer to use the term "heart of the Buddha" because this emphasizes the "heart" aspect of this Teaching.

The Dharma provides methods by which we learn to live "from the heart of a Buddha." They are accompanied by many detailed psychological explanations of the nature of the mind and the principles of its functioning. Psychology is the study of the mind, and Buddhist methods are often similar to cognitive behavioral therapy.


Ignorance is a darkened state of mind that prevents one from comprehending true reality. It leads to suffering because it does not allow us to understand that all phenomena are impermanent, composite and interdependent.

Who is the Buddha we hear so much about? He was a great teacher known by the names of Gautama and Shakyamuni. More than 2500 years ago, he was born into the royal family of the Shakya tribe and received the name Siddhartha. From childhood he was carefully protected from unpleasant impressions, and only when he became an adult man did he understand what old age, illness and death were. This experience made him think about the meaning of life. Having met a meditating yogi, Siddhartha decided to renounce his royal privileges and began the path of a hermit, a seeker of truth. For six years he studied with the most famous saints of his time. He practiced either self-indulgence or asceticism, but neither brought the answers to his questions or the wisdom he sought. Asceticism brought him to the point of exhaustion, and, abandoning this path, the prince sat down under a spreading mulberry tree (today it is called the Bodhi tree) and decided to meditate until one of two things happened: either he would gain the knowledge he was looking for, or he would die. . Fortunately for all of us, he achieved Enlightenment. He found answers to all his questions. Then he was called Buddha, or the Awakened One.

Then he began to have students, and he realized that his wisdom could serve other people. He began to pass on to them everything he had learned, and did this for the next 45 years until his death - which occurred when the Enlightened One turned 80 years old.


Mind in Buddhism is defined as the ability to perceive, recognize or experience.

It is believed that the mind has three aspects: 1) clarity, that is, the ability to know the phenomena that arise in it in an unlimited variety; 2) emptiness: he is free from any independent existence; 3) boundlessness: it is like open space, not tied to the center and edge. In addition, if there is effective methods the mind is capable of knowing itself completely.

The first teachings given by the Buddha contain his fundamental understanding - the Four Noble Truths. Together with the Eightfold Path, these precepts form the basis of Buddhism.

When you read about the various approaches and exercises that are consistent with Buddhist truths, you probably get the feeling: “This is so true!” What I write about is deeply connected to the compassionate Buddha nature that we all have. By revealing it within ourselves, we can act successfully in all areas of our lives, and not just in the role of parents.

I encourage you to read the entire book first to gain as much understanding as possible of the underlying motivations, ideas and principles, and therefore the overall concept of raising children with Buddha nature. Then go back to the beginning and select the skills that you would like to develop in yourself. The order - where to start, and what to start second - decide for yourself. I advise you to start with simpler things and work on only one of the methods each time; Once you feel like you've achieved what you want, move on.

All of these skills and strategies need to be developed through practice. This will take time: erroneous mechanisms for responding to children’s behavior will not disappear immediately. They have been developing over the years, and it will take a lot of effort to create new useful and effective habits.

Be kind to yourself. Your development will not always be linear, and that's okay. Sometimes we make good progress for a while, and then the old patterns suddenly appear again. Stay patient and compassionate with yourself. Don't be self-flagellation. If you have embarked on this path, then you are moving in the right direction. Your Buddha nature is always available.

Material wealth binds us to samsara - but being a parent can lead to liberation.

This Sanskrit word is often translated as "conditional existence." People attached to the illusion of self and overwhelmed by disturbing emotions commit awkward acts that lead them to take birth in the six worlds. These are six unenlightened states of consciousness, permeated with various types of suffering and discomfort. One can be liberated from samsara, since the cause of rebirth is an error of perception, ignorance, ignorance of the true nature of the mind.

Compassion and wisdom are at the core of Buddhist philosophy. A balanced combination of these qualities is as important for raising children as it is for Buddhism as a whole. These are two wings of a bird - with one it cannot fly. If parents have compassion but forget wisdom, they will achieve nothing. Wisdom is needed to understand how to use empathy. Otherwise, it will do more harm than good – both to children and to our relationships with them.

Buddhist Lama Trungpa Rinpoche showed the difference between actual compassion and what he himself called the compassion of an idiot - that is, compassion without wisdom. This is a very apt term: with this approach we feel good, believing that we are acting for the benefit of our children, but in fact we are acting like an idiot or a fool, indifferent to reality and to the true results of our actions.

For example, we sympathize with our daughter because her friends said something to her and she is now upset. We think we have to step in and “fix things.” But by doing this, we will prevent our daughter from learning from experience.

Another example: our baby loves sweets. He cries all the time, begging for candy, and out of sympathy we agree. When the son grows up, he will suffer from tooth decay, excess blood sugar and excess weight.

If we combined compassion with wisdom in these situations, we would act very differently, and our actions would benefit the child. Only wisdom helps us respond correctly to the suffering of others.

If we balance wisdom and compassion through the Buddhist approach to parenting, it will impact more than just our lives and the lives of our children. As parents, we have a unique opportunity to influence people on a larger scale. The method of cultivating Buddha nature can produce such an internal transformation that will bring more peace and tranquility to people, because peace in the outer world is created due to inner peace in people's minds.

In general, peace is not an external phenomenon, but an internal one, and mindfulness combined with impartiality helps to achieve it. Many people think that if they meditate, their mind will come to a state of peace. This is true to a certain extent, but meditation is not only done on a special pillow and in a special position.

Meditation is the ability to remain mindful at different moments in our daily lives. Take washing dishes for example - we can carefully wash the dishes to make them clean, or we can carefully wash the dishes to wash the dishes. This way we can concentrate on the actual experience of washing dishes. If we choose to apply mindfulness during this activity, the goal is not clean plates, but being fully present in the process itself. Then we become more aware of both the chosen task and the work to complete it.

Impartiality - in a Buddhist context means freedom from attachment and hostility, as well as an equally equanimous attitude towards praise and blasphemy.

When we play with children, we can also choose what to focus on or apply mindfulness to. You can play to develop some skill in children or simply to calm them down, or you can do it to rejoice and enjoy the game and communication. In any case, we are consciously present in the moment.

Sometimes we will read a story to children simply for the sake of reading and enjoying our interaction, and other times the purpose of reading will be to help them learn the alphabet or learn something new. When communicating with a child, we can set ourselves the goal of “just communicating” - and consciously stick to it.

Mindfulness and mindfulness is a clear presence that allows the practitioner to be fully aware of the object on which he is concentrating. It is a distinct and directed state. The Tibetan verb "dran pa" also means "to remember" or "to be fully present."

The smile that lights up our face evokes a response in the heart of a child.

Having decided what to tackle as carefully and consciously as possible, we are not distracted by other things. This opportunity should be used wisely and compassionately, so that you choose an action that will benefit the children now and over time.

Mindfulness brings peace, which we will spread around us constantly. When we are calm and full of loving kindness, this is passed on to our children. They feel valued. They may learn something new or learn how to behave during and after our fun together.

Peace is available to us when we are able to quiet our distracted or agitated mind and be present in what is. If we managed to achieve this, we are happy and smile. The smile that lights up our face evokes a response in the heart of a child. It relaxes our facial muscles, promotes mindfulness and has a wonderful calming effect on everyone. This feeling of blissful stillness supports us in our parental role.

An enlightened attitude (bodhichitta in Sanskrit) is the decision to achieve Enlightenment and lead all beings to it without exception.

By developing compassion and an enlightened attitude, we gain the power to create an atmosphere of peace and harmony first in the family, then in the wider community, and ultimately wherever we go. This is why cultivating the enlightened attitude, or bodhichitta, is an important part of Buddhist meditation.

If we, in addition, can create an atmosphere of impersonal love in the family, help children also develop empathy and thereby achieve inner harmony, then peace and joy will increase exponentially.

All methods of the Buddhist path contribute to the cultivation of the Enlightened Attitude. It takes us away from focusing on ourselves and therefore frees us from suffering. Using Buddhist methods, we will learn to cultivate bodhichitta in any situation in life.
