Sew a tablecloth onto an oval table. Sewing tablecloths with your own hands on the table. Decorating the edges of the tablecloth with a satin ribbon

Today, several methods of sewing tablecloths for tables stand out. This variety can be explained by the fact that the corners and side sections are processed in different ways. Below is the main method that is used most often. By studying it, you will definitely understand how to sew not only everyday, but also an elegant product that is not ashamed to put on the table during the holiday. This technology is also used in the manufacture of napkins, towels and table cloth made of cloth, called runners.

To make a beautiful and aesthetic product covering the kitchen table, the following tools and materials will be required:

  • a piece of fabric of a certain size (for example, you can make a tablecloth of tulle);
  • threads matching the material and threads for decorative finishes;
  • sewing machine;
  • accessories for sewing;
  • scissors for working with fabric;
  • ruler for taking measurements, as well as a centimeter tape;
  • pins
  • a thimble that ensures the safety of work with piercing objects;
  • devices for easy threading, which facilitates the preparation process for people who do not see well enough;

You can choose another way - knitting. Crocheting a tablecloth on a rectangular table or furniture that has a different shape is not so difficult even for a novice master, if you use suitable schemes. You can easily find them on our website to quickly learn knitting and create beautiful crochet tablecloths. In order to start knitting, you will need: hook number 2 and cotton threads (to complete all the work you need about 0.9-1 kg). The shade of the threads may vary, however, experts say that the most spectacularly knitted white tablecloth looks on the table.

To make your task easier, choose a motif with a repeating pattern and tie a sufficient number of fragments. After completing work, firmly fasten the repeating elements.

For masters who are just beginning to master knitting, it is better to make a good tablecloth from elements with the same pattern, having the same size. Upon completion of the work, these repeating parts are simply stapled together. For beginners planning to make a tablecloth on an oval table, I would like to suggest choosing a pattern from repeating columns. Masters who knit for a long time, it is recommended to show imagination.

A tablecloth on the table is an obligatory attribute of any feast and ordinary kitchen life. It can be of various shapes - round, rectangular, square and oval. Sewing a tablecloth is not at all difficult. Any housewife will be able to cope with this, and if you apply imagination and try, you can create a masterpiece to everyone's surprise.

Instruction manual

Choose fabric. It should be tight, heavy enough, draped well so that the ends hang beautifully from the edge of the table. For the dining table, natural fabrics are suitable - linen, linen, dense cotton fabric. For a decorative tablecloth, you can choose a dense jacquard fabric, heavy silk, satin.

Make a pattern and cut the fabric. It is important that the oval of the tablecloth exactly repeats the oval of the countertop, otherwise the tablecloth will hang unevenly around the edges. Take a roll of paper and transfer the contour of the oval of the countertop onto it, make a pattern. Fold the fabric in half with the front side inward, fold the pattern in half, combine the folds of the fabric, add 30-40 cm along the edge so that it hangs beautifully and cut out the future tablecloth.

Sew the hem. The edge of the tablecloth can simply be hemmed on a sewing machine. It is advisable to insert a heavy thin cord in the seam to make the edge heavier - it will be better to drape the tablecloth and not move out of the table. You can trim the edge with braid, brushes, or lace. To do this, bend the edge of the tablecloth, baste, then attach the braid or lace and carefully sew on the typewriter in two rows of lines. During operation, do not pull the braid, otherwise the edge will be pulled.

Make a decor. For example, decorate the tablecloth with applique, embroidery,. You can connect a plain fabric and fabric with a pattern, striped, in a cage. Instead of free ends, sew on a tablecloth edge a frill of the same fabric or in contrasting color. The diaper naperon, sewn in the form of a square from contrasting fabric, looks very beautiful and original. You can decorate the tablecloth on the oval table with a path laid along the table in the center, also in a contrasting color. In order to create a unique thing, you need a little imagination.

Kitchen tablecloths are oilcloth, silk, linen, cotton and others, and to sew such a product or a path for the festive table is easy with your own hands.

Nothing gives the house such a feeling of warmth and coziness as an elegant tablecloth. Purchased in a store or sewn with your own hands, it can completely transform, and the whole room. Previously, this detail of the interior was revered as a luxury, sometimes receiving a dismissive refinement - philistine. But capricious fashion has a pleasant habit of returning. So now the tablecloth can be laid not only on holidays, and not only in the kitchen. About the choice of this textile element and sewing with your own hands is described below.

Fabrics for all occasions

Tablecloths are still usually divided into festive and everyday. But within this simple classification, “narrow-profile” options also appeared. Festive varied New Year's, Easter, children's and wedding patterns. And among everyday models you can now find tea, dining and those that are designed to simply complement the interior. To begin with, we will determine what materials they should be sewn from.

Everyday materials:

  • Oilcloth: the cheapest and most capricious option - oilcloth tablecloths - have nothing to do with fabrics. Suitable for a simple family dinner on a weekday. And in the country there is simply no price for such non-whimsical material. Buy several bright models for tables in the kitchen, terrace and in the gazebo (if any) at once.
  • Polyester: also a relatively inexpensive material that tolerates regular washing by hand or machine and does not require tedious ironing afterwards.
  • Jacquard: these tablecloths with a double-sided pattern can safely be called "2 in 1". From the front and from the wrong side, they look differently, so that in the mood (or with the appearance of irreducible spots) they can be overridden as you want. Jacquard fabrics are more dense, and therefore serve longer than others.

Of the festive options for tablecloth fabric, three main ones can be distinguished.

Cotton

Tablecloths made of natural cotton with teflon or acrylic waterproof coatings are perfect for serving a gala dinner. It is such material that can withstand an endless stream of visitors to cafes and restaurants, as well as regular washing in not the most sparing conditions. Special impregnations protect cotton from stains, hot dishes and spilled drinks. At the same time, the tablecloth is not worth the “stake”, but can flow beautifully, going down from the edge of the countertop.

Linen

Unfortunately, gentle linen is not subjected to protective treatment. Therefore, the beauty of linen tablecloths with lace or embossed patterns, luxurious handmade embroidery is, alas, short-lived. It is almost impossible to wash the stained fabric, so linen is often used as the basis for multilayer draperies.

Natural cotton and linen are good in that they can be used on a weekday, and for a festive table setting. The addition of polyester fibers makes them more practical and does not spoil the appearance.

To preserve the neat appearance of the tablecloth, a table over it is covered with dense jacquard paths or a shorter naperon. The exquisitely decorated edges of the linen tablecloth will remain visible at the level of the table legs, and the center will be reliably protected from stains.

Silk

Expensive silk fabrics are rarely used for dining tables. But they look great in the interior: on the cabinets and chests of drawers. However, at a wedding party it is difficult to imagine something more luxurious than thin flowing silk with elaborate embroidery.

Tablecloth shape

What shape should be the tablecloth, determine the countertop. Some table models are only friends with their geometric counterparts, while others allow combination. Know these subtleties necessary.

  • Rectangular countertop: only the same rectangular tablecloths are suitable for it. Nothing else can lay a traditional table. However, special tracks (runners or runners) add some variety. But they also have a rectangular shape.
  • Square countertop: lined with the same principle - only with square cuts. But no one bothers you with your own hands to make an interesting two-layer coating by laying two tablecloths of different colors and sizes crosswise. In the photo of designer kitchens, you can often see this particular technique. By the way, the path on the square table will be inappropriate.
  • Circle: on such a countertop, both a square and a round tablecloth look great, and even both together. The main thing is, making the table exactly find the center of the cuts and make sure that the drapery is evenly distributed.
  • Oval tables: these original models are also unpretentious - both textile ellipses and elegant rectangular tablecloths are suitable for them.

Choose size

Having dealt with the form, we proceed to the crucial stage of choosing a tablecloth for a table of a suitable size. Going to the store, do not be too lazy to measure the countertop using a tape measure yourself and write down or remember the result. When buying, focus on those products that will be guaranteed to hang from the edge for another 20-30 cm.

You can determine the optimal length of the tablecloth by placing a chair on the table. Ideally, the edge of the drapery should hang just to the seat level - not lower.

Models that turn out to be longer have a right to exist in your house, but you should not go too far. Take 40 cm for the maximum permissible length of the hanging drapery and try not to buy larger tablecloths. In the photo of fashionable interiors and in modern restaurants, tablecloths on the floor look very beautiful. But imagine for a moment how your guests will begin to get confused in these draperies, trying to get up from the table. Well, if it does not end with a dip or broken dishes. From short tablecloths it is better to refuse completely. An exception can only be naperon, which you will lay on top of the main canvas.

There are requirements for the width of the table paths. The size of the textile strip should not be wider than half the table. For large countertops, runner tracks of only 30-40 cm in size can be used, having “drawn” the table into separate zones with their help. Do not forget that the main purpose of the slider is to protect the tablecloth from stains. Therefore, lay the tracks so that they are conveniently placed devices for everyone sitting at the table.

Instead of a runner, you can use more conservative tissue wipes. For good holiday tablecloths, as a rule, they are already included. Their only difference from the dining path is that small napkins are used only at lunch, while the slider can serve as a simple decoration for the table and the rest of the time.

Colors

The most popular were and remain light colors - they always look elegant. Such tablecloths will be appropriate for any occasion, whether it is an ordinary family dinner or a gala event. But with more saturated shades, you need to choose the right tactic, dividing them into cold and warm colors:

  • Green, blue, blue - these cold shades slightly reduce appetite, but also soothe nerves. If people gather at the table who don’t know how to restrain their emotions, such tablecloths will help to smooth the atmosphere a bit.
  • All colors from red to bright yellow are not just warm - they are hot. Such tablecloths for the table are bought by housewives who like friendly gatherings at a plentiful dinner. Warm colors stimulate the appetite, so that at the table, covered with a bright tablecloth, no one will refuse to treat.

Try to get tablecloths without colorful drawings - colorful items are more suitable for a children's sweet table or tea party in the country. Otherwise, plain fabrics will be more appropriate. And to create a beautiful combination of colors, you can simply use multilayer styling or bright paths.

And most importantly - the tablecloth should be in harmony with the surrounding interior. And it will merge with him or attract attention with a contrasting color - you decide. In an extreme case, you can order or sew your own chair covers from the same fabric from which the tablecloth is made. You can easily find photos and patterns on the forums of craftswomen. Then in your dining room there will be a full-fledged dining group, made in the same style.

We sew a tablecloth ourselves

Having understood all the intricacies of choosing the right fabrics and forms for tablecloths, it’s easy to make your own hands a whole set of a wide variety of models for decorating the table. Here, just with the dimensions you can accurately guess, and original ideas to realize.

Sewing provides the following procedure:

  1. Measure the countertop and the length of the hanging draperies on the tablecloth.
  2. Make a pattern in accordance with the dimensions obtained, leaving 2.5 cm on each side for hemming.
  3. Sew together separate panels or just overcast the edges of the tablecloth.
  4. Decorate with embroidery, lace or leave as is.

If the table is large, and you have to sew a tablecloth with your own hands from several panels, try so that the seams do not appear in sight. Although such a cut is not the most rational, it is better to put a whole piece of matter in the center, and stitch the missing parts on the sides.

Do-it-yourself tablecloth - master class

In order to correctly calculate the required length of fabric on the tablecloth, measure the length and width of your table and add 60 cm to the measured values. The calculated tablecloth length (DW) and tablecloth width (AL) in the finished form are calculated by the formula: ДС \u003d Table width + 60 cm, AL \u003d Table length + 60 cm. According to the norms, the tablecloth should go down from all the table edges by 25-30 cm.

As a rule, tablecloths bought in stores are of standard size and do not always fit our table, going down the edges too much or not enough. This is another argument to sew the tablecloth on your own!

Tablecloth fabric can be bought at the curtain fabric store. The width of such fabrics is usually 2.8-3.0 m, which will allow you to sew a tablecloth even on a large table. The dimensions of the table presented in the master class are 0.9 mx 1.8 m.

For our tablecloth and 4 napkins we needed:

Main fabric:a cotton tapestry with a floral pattern - 1.5 m with a fabric width of 2.8 m.

Lining fabric:   cotton poplin 2.4 m long and 150 cm wide.

Satin ribbon for processing the edges of the tablecloth 6.5 cm wide, 8.5 m long, lace trim 2.5 cm wide and 8.5 m long, threads in tone.

For processing the edges of napkins (napkin size 0.3 x 0.3 m.): Satin ribbon 3 cm wide, 5 m long, lace trim 2.5 cm wide and 5 m long, threads in tone.

Decorating the edges of the tablecloth with a satin ribbon

To decorate the tablecloth, a satin ribbon and lace trim are used. First you need to grind a satin ribbon along the edges of the tablecloth, then a lace trim is sewn onto the ribbon (Fig. 9).

Fig. 9. Satin ribbon and lace trim

Start stitching a satin ribbon from one of the corners of the tablecloth. Position it exactly along the edges and lay the line exactly on the edge.

Fig. 10. How to stitch a satin ribbon

To make it convenient for you to bring the fabric under the foot while turning the corner, thread a double thread at the top of each corner. When turning, pull the thread to facilitate the advancement of fabric under the foot.

Fig. 11. When turning the corner, pull the thread

After the satin ribbon is stitched around the entire perimeter of the tablecloth, it is necessary to draw the corners. To do this, lay the tape at an angle of 90 ° and cut off the excess tape to the corner, leaving allowances for the hem edges.

Fig. 12. Cut corners of satin ribbon

Tuck one tape allowance over another, bend the top allowance and bite or pin it with pins.

Make sure that when bending the tape, a neat, even bend is obtained. Stitch the corner allowance exactly to the edge.

The open edge of the ribbon can be pinned to the tablecloth with pins or swept, along this edge we will sew a lace trim.

Lace trim should be sharpened exactly in the center. To do this, put the tape on the open edge of the satin ribbon and stitch it in the center, while also attaching the inner edge of the satin ribbon.

Having reached the corner, bend the lace trim at a 90 ° angle, fold the allowances inward and continue the stitching. Stitch in on all sides of the tablecloth, fasten and cut the ends of the threads.

The finished tablecloth looks simply luxurious and will serve you for many years. Advice! Get yourself a brush and dustpan for such a tablecloth and your table will always be neat and clean!

How to cut and sew napkins

For the kit you will need 6 table napkins. For their sewing, use the same fabrics as for the tablecloth. Cut napkins from the main and lining fabrics and sew in the same way as a tablecloth. To decorate the napkins, use a narrower satin ribbon 3 cm wide.
