American beading for beginners. Bead strand - weaving pattern. A small master class for beginners

Main types of bead strands

Today we will talk about what types of bead strands there are, and we will tell you how their weaving patterns differ.

To begin with, I would like to note that a strand of beads is a hollow cord that can be made with openwork or dense weaving. Moreover, according to the technique of execution, it can be knitted (a thread and a hook are used) and braided (a fishing line and a needle are used).

Many years ago, the first strands were woven from threads, stringing beads on them. First, flat wide ribbons were made, and then they were sewn into a hollow rope. Over time, this technique has undergone changes, and now the decoration is woven from a single thread or fishing line (although stitching is still used in some patterns).

According to the types, the plaits are: mosaic, openwork, square, Turkish, twisted, shaggy, and there are also ndbele plaits.

As a rule, materials such as fishing line of a certain thickness (must correspond to the size of the internal holes of the beads), beads, bead needles, pliers, scissors, wire cutters and jewelry accessories are used for weaving. The latter is needed to hide the knots from the fishing line and make a beautiful fastener (for example, a hugger, callots, connecting rings, a carabiner).

Mosaic harness

The mosaic harness is one of the most common, since its implementation scheme is quite simple. It is woven from an odd number of beads. There can be 5, 7, 9 or even more, but it is better to take a smaller number, so the decoration will turn out more neat.

Advice: During weaving (whatever types of bead strands it may be), you need to ensure that the product is dense and at the same time plastic. To do this, you need to learn how to weave with the same thread tension along the entire length of the decoration.

Weaving pattern. As we already said, there is nothing complicated about it.

1. It all starts with stringing the required number of beads onto a fishing line, say 7. Then they are closed into a ring (the free end of the fishing line is pulled through the first bead). In this case, at the base of the product you need to leave 15 centimeters of free fishing line, which will be needed later to secure the harness. The first row is ready.

2. The second row is woven in a mosaic pattern. That is, now after stringing each new bead, a fishing line or thread is passed through one bead of the first row. First it will be 3rd, then 5th and 7th.

3. And the third row is made in such a way that the fishing line is pulled through each bead of the second row. That is, its needle must be inserted through the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and so on beads until the current row ends. Then everything else works the same way. The fourth row is a mosaic, the fifth is a continuous weave.

4. When the rope is of the required length, its ends are secured. They are either woven together, or a fastener is made using special fittings.

The result of such weaving should be a decoration with a fairly dense structure.

Openwork plait

This type of tourniquet differs from the previous one in that it has openwork pattern and weaves a little differently. It can be quite wide in cross section and consist of an even or odd number of beads. For example, there may be 11 or 14 of them. It all depends on personal preference and the specific method of execution.

Advice: To make such a harness “softer,” it is worth making larger gaps in the weaving. And for this you need to collect only an odd number of beads.

Weaving pattern. To make it clear to everyone how to make an openwork plait, let’s look at a specific example.

1. The first row is formed from 4 beads of the same size, strung one after another and woven into a ring.

2. The second row is formed like this: three new beads are put on the fishing line, and the needle is threaded through the next three beads of the first row. That is, the 2nd, 3rd and 4th are skipped, and the line is threaded into the 5th. Thus, the entire first row is woven (then the needle passes through the 9th and 13th beads).

3. The third row is woven in the same way through three beads with fastening in the 4th.

Such strands can be used not only to create jewelry, but also for decorative braiding of vases, decanters and other products.

Square harness

Unlike the previous two, the square strand is woven according to a more complex pattern, and is significantly different in appearance. Since it is called square, the principle of its creation lies in the weaving of the bottom, four sides and top.

Advice: so that it turns out to be a square correct form, it is advisable to make such strands of beads of the same size.

Weaving pattern. The general weaving pattern of this strand is a little difficult, but this is only at first glance; as soon as the first cube is formed, everything will immediately become clear.

1. To begin with, four beads are strung on a thread and fastened into a kind of square.

2. Then take three more new beads and thread the needle through one bead from the beginning of the row (that is, into the 3rd). Then they pick up three more and again pass the needle through the second bead from the thread (1st). This turns out to be two walls of a cube.

3. Now, in order to lift them, the thread is passed through the adjacent bead (5th) and, having strung just one bead, the thread is pulled through the central bead of one of the sides of the cube (the one numbered 9 in the figure).

4. To complete the cube, string another bead onto the thread and thread the needle through the central bead of the opposite wall (number 6). By tightening the thread you can see the finished cube.

The result is a fairly dense strand that can be varied in many ways. For example, you can weave a row of beads of a contrasting color over it or use them to connect it with another square strand.

Turkish tourniquet done with a hook. Beads with glass beads are strung on a thread, and then weaving is done according to a specific pattern. The result is quite beautiful decoration with original drawing.

Twisted tourniquet

To create it you only need a thread and a needle. It has a relief, spiral-shaped structure, and therefore stands out against the background of all the others.

Weaving pattern. In fact, there may be several weaving patterns here. But we will tell you about one that can be called the main one.

1. The example uses two colors of beads, which allows you to clearly see the twisted pattern. First, 7 beads are strung on the thread - 4 black and 3 purple. A loop is then made by threading the needle through four black beads at the same time.

2. Now 4 more new beads are attached to the thread - 3 purple and 1 black. This time the needle is again passed through the black beads, only not through 4, but through 3, with an upward shift. To secure the loop, the needle is threaded through 1 black bead that was just added to the overall pattern.

Many women simply cannot resist an elegant accessory called a beaded cord. This decoration can be done independently. Moreover, if desired, you can make several bundles of different colors and shapes. Thanks to this, they can be combined with different clothes and always look amazing.

What you need to weave a rope

When considering how to weave strands of beads, you need, first of all, to stock up on the materials necessary for the work. The main thing is beads of the right size and color. There is no need to skimp on beads - high-quality beads will look beautiful and bright in the product.

You will also need strong thread or fishing line, beading needles, pins and clasps to create a necklace or bracelet.

A bracelet made of high-quality beads will look beautiful and expensive

How to weave classic bead strands

One of the weaving options is done using the weaving method familiar to many needlewomen - stringing beads on a needle and weaving in a special order. There is a diagram of a strand of beads that will allow you to easily and simply complete the work in one color or in different colors.

  1. First, you need to string 4 beads sequentially, and then pass the needle again through the first bead.
  2. Then you need to string three more beads, after which you need to pass the needle through the third bead in the first circle.
  3. After this, three more beads are strung, and the needle is passed through the first bead of the second circle.
  4. By stringing two beads, we balance the edges of the rope.
  5. Then we string three beads again and then weave by analogy.

It is very easy to follow the given diagram, since it is indicated exactly how many beads need to be collected and through which number of needles to pass.

How to crochet a beaded rope

There is another option. Beads as well as in previous version need to be strung on monofilament or fishing line. Only the thread and beads are connected into a strand not with a needle, but with a crochet hook.

  1. First of all, a knot is made on the thread so that the work does not come undone. Then the bead is strung, and you need to grab the thread with a hook to pass it into the resulting loop - this is how an air loop is made.
  2. When a chain of air loops of the required length is made, you should connect them in a circle, and then move on to another stage of knitting - knitting single crochets. To do this, you need to have one loop on the hook, and pull another loop from the adjacent air loop. Then the free working thread must be pulled through both of these loops. And so continue to perform single crochets.

The main thing in this type of knitting is to maintain the uniformity of stringing the beads. That is, it is necessary not to accumulate all the beads in one place and not to knit with just one thread without beads. That is, one bead should be for each crochet step.

How to decipher weaving patterns with ornaments

You can weave incredibly beautiful ropes with all kinds of ornaments. To do this, you need to be able to decipher the weaving patterns of such strands.

Scheme for weaving a rope of beads (continue weaving)

Let's look at this in the picture, where the main points are highlighted in red:

  • the number 9 means the number of beads from which the circle will be strung,
  • the number 296 means the number of beads in the repeat, that is, the number of beads in a repeating segment of the pattern, thanks to this you can calculate the required number of beads for work,
  • Each of the 7 columns in the diagram has multi-colored squares with numbers. The numbers indicate the number of beads of a certain color for weaving,
  • beads are collected in horizontal rows from top to bottom and from left to right in the first row, and then from right to left in the second, and so alternate until the end.

I hope I have presented the material clearly enough. If you have any questions, ask them in the comments to the article!

Having become a little more comfortable with mosaic weaving, I decided to continue making beaded jewelry using this technique.

If you remember, I already have a braided and beaded sodalite cabochon ready, and I even made a beaded loop for it using the mosaic weaving technique, so that the braided cabochon turned into a beaded pendant.

Now all that remains is to figure out what to hang the beaded cabochon pendant on so that it can be worn as a necklace.

While searching for master classes and patterns on mosaic bead weaving, I have repeatedly come across instructions for making a beaded cord. Moreover, it turned out that a cord made of beads, or as it is also called a “harness,” can be either woven or crocheted.

Harness option, crocheted made of thread with beads strung on it, although it captivated with its reliability, it did not arouse enthusiasm: I always resort to using a hook in the most extreme cases. Therefore, it’s one thing to crochet the edge of a children’s scarf knitted with knitting needles or, say, to connect the loops of an openwork beret knitted with knitting needles using a hook. And it’s quite another thing to knit a beaded rope without having the skill to use a crochet hook.

I mention this method of making a beaded cord only because someone may find this option easier and more accessible than weaving a beaded cord using a needle. You will find a video on crocheting a beaded rope at the end of the post.

And now it's time to deal with the fact

How to weave a mosaic strand of beads

The simplest and most common version of a mosaic strand made of beads is mosaic strand woven in a circle (cross weaving). Such a tourniquet turns out to be very dense and at the same time quite elastic.

To weave a mosaic strand and create a beaded necklace based on it, I will need:

  • Czech beads Preciosa 10/0 (shiny pale blue and transparent dark blue)
  • fishing line 0.25 mm thick
  • bead needle
  • scissors
  • tweezers
  • lighter
  • thick white shoe thread
  • wire cutters
  • round pliers
  • silver-look jewelry fittings (2 pins, 2 caps and a magnetic clasp)

For clarity, I attach

pattern of transverse weaving of a mosaic strand of beads in a circle on 7 beads

Master class on weaving a mosaic rope from beads

1st row (Fig. 1): I string 7 beads onto a fishing line: 2 blue, 1 blue and 4 blue (To weave a mosaic strand in a circle, you can pick up any odd number of beads, starting from 5, depending on the desired thickness of the finished strand)

I stretch the fishing line through the entire first row of beads.

I close the fishing line into a ring, leaving a free end 15 cm long.

2nd row (Fig. 2): I stretch the fishing line through the first (blue) bead of the first row and string one blue bead onto it.

Again I skip one bead of the first row and stretch the fishing line through the fifth (blue) bead of the first row.

I stretch the line through the last seventh bead of the first row.

Row 3 (Fig. 3): I string one blue bead onto a fishing line. I stretch the fishing line through the first (blue) bead of the second row and again string one blue bead onto the fishing line.

I stretch the fishing line through the second (blue) bead of the second row and string one blue bead onto it.

Pattern: To get a spiral pattern of dark blue beads on a blue background, in each new row, when removing the needle from blue beads, I string a blue bead onto the fishing line and, accordingly, when removing the needle from blue beads, I string a blue bead.

I continue weaving the mosaic strand according to the pattern until the desired length is achieved.

At a certain stage of work on weaving a mosaic strand, you may have a natural question:

How to secure and extend fishing line or thread when weaving with beads?

It was for these purposes that I prepared thin tweezers and a lighter.

If you see that the fishing line or thread is running out when weaving with beads, and it is not enough to finish the weaving, you must leave a free end 10-12 cm long.

To insert a new piece of fishing line, you need to tie it to the working fishing line from the inside of the bundle, making several knots between the previously strung beads and stretching the new fishing line through the strung beads.

After both pieces of fishing line are connected and secured, the remaining ends need to be cut off, but not right to the knot, but leaving small tails, 0.5-0.7 cm long, and then melt them with a lighter, first holding them with tweezers so that do not damage the knots or stain the beads.

When a spiral mosaic strand of the required length is woven, I pull a thick shoe thread through it to prevent excessive stretching of the fishing line under the weight of the beaded pendant.

By the way, I accidentally found this diagram showing how the finished necklace, beads or necklace will look when worn:

I pull the tails of the fishing line and the ends of the shoe thread remaining at the ends of the braided rope through the loops of jewelry pins, fasten it, melt it with a lighter and pull it inside the beaded rope.

I put a jewelry cap on each pin.

I shorten the pins to the required length. Using round nose pliers I bend the free ends of the pins into loops. I attach half a magnetic fastener to each eyelet.

Now all that remains is to hang a cabochon pendant braided with beads on the finished mosaic bead strand. And here is the result - a simple but quite spectacular beaded necklace:

Master class on creating a Turkish tourniquet

For beginners in needlework, a detailed step-by-step master class, thanks to which new craftswomen will create their first masterpiece.

Photo illustrations Step-by-step instruction

Before you start creating a Turkish cord, you need to prepare the base for knitting. To do this, take the prepared thread and string the necessary elements onto it, consisting of four beads and one bugle bead. The set of fragments alternates until there are two meters. It is better to collect a little more material, because during the work it is difficult to tie the tourniquet, as it can easily unravel. Select the quantity by measuring the glass beads.

You can string it using a needle or the glued end of a thread.

Having prepared the thread for knitting, take right hand hook, and with the left hand we make an air loop at the end of the thread, carefully tightening it until a knot is formed. We move the first set of elements to the tool: four beads and one bugle. It is in this sequence that it will be more convenient to knit.

We form an air loop, including beads and glass beads.

We move the next set of beads and repeat the previous steps. We create a classic Turkish cord consisting of three loops. Therefore, we form the third air loop from the next set.

At this stage, you need to knit carefully so as not to disrupt the sequence of the knitting process. Take the hook and insert it into central part the first loop of the first set, placing the tool between the bead and the bugle.

We move four beads and one glass bead closer to the knitting tool, grabbing the thread above the elements with the tool. Next, we pass it through two loops, and again grab the thread with a hook, passing it through the loop located on the tool.

We continue to repeat the previously performed manipulations by grabbing the second loop, then the third, thus moving upward in a spiral.

Having tied the required length of the product, we form a reliable knot closer to the elements. Cut the remaining thread with scissors. We attach special tips for necklaces (bracelets) to the ends of the formed product. We pass a small piece of wire through the cord and the tip, which is securely attached to the end of the craft. We thread the tip of the wire into the tip and bend the top edge into a small connecting ring using pliers.

We fix the lock to the connecting ring. The decoration of unusual beauty is ready.

As a result of painstaking and concentrated creative work the result is a luxurious necklace that is perfect for women's evening dress. Having understood the principle of weaving an unusual strand, needlewomen can create unique products, guided by their personal imagination. For example, instead of bugles, you can use beads in the shape of rice, selecting the desired bright colors. See the photo illustration below.

Instead of glass beads, you can weave multi-colored ones. Accessories made using this method also look beautiful and extraordinary. See photos below.

Such a tourniquet will not go unnoticed and will attract the admiring glances of people around you.

A magnificent beaded product will be suitable as an expensive gift for a close friend or family who will appreciate the craftsmanship of the needlewoman.
