French perfume 80s titles. Foreign perfumery of the Soviet Union. Diorella by Dior

Little is known about the Soviet perfumery of the period after the revolution and the Second World War. In 1917, the world-famous house A. Rallet & Co was nationalized and first renamed the State Soap Factory No. 4, and then became the Svoboda factory.

Content:

At the same time, the factory " new dawn”(the successor to the Brokar company), and Svoboda concentrated on the production of soap, tooth powders, creams, shaving products, etc. Unfortunately, the traditions and experience gained before the revolution were partially lost. And because of the political regime, the free circulation of spirits between the USSR and Western countries was out of the question.

In the Soviet Union, the following were very popular:

  • "Riga Lilac" by Dzintars;
  • Anais Anais by Cacharel;
  • Estee from Estee Lauder;
  • Mon Parfum by Paloma Picasso and other legends, which we will talk about in more detail in this publication.

The development of the industry in the post-war period

After the Second World War, the perfumery and cosmetic industry was restored not only in the Soviet Union, but also in Europe. Already in 1947, Dior released the Miss Dior perfume, and a year later, the house Nina Ricci presented his fragrance L "Air du Temps. Production also resumed in the USSR essential oils and fragrant substances. The Novaya Zarya and Northern Lights factories started working again. And in 1949, the training of future professionals began. But, despite the overall increase in production and a wide range ( large and small factories produced up to 400 items!), gradually became noticeable insufficient diversity of raw materials. To exchange experience, leading specialists and employees of Soyuzparfyumerprom and VNIISNDV began to travel abroad already in the 1950s and 60s - to China, France, Switzerland, then business trips to Brazil, the USA and Holland took place. There they got acquainted with Western masters and the work of perfume companies.

However, the exchange of experience was not one-sided. Then for the first time in the USSR there was a show fashion clothes Dior houses. It happened in 1959, and at the same time, Soviet women recognized the Miss Dior fragrance. It is said that representatives of the French fashion house brought with them about 500 liters of perfume. Some of them were sprayed during fashion presentations, and some were donated to the wives of diplomats and senior officials.

Despite the fact that Novaya Zarya, Northern Lights and other factories of the Union republics produced their products in sufficient quantities, good cosmetics and perfume remained in short supply. At the same time, it was often imported goods that were meant by good. Sometimes perfumery appeared in the USSR from European countries, first of all, East Germany, Poland, France, but it was distributed through narrow channels of personal connections or was sold in Beryozka stores that appeared in the mid-1960s.

The most accessible imported perfumes were perhaps the Polish ones, such as Pani Walewska, which combined aldehyde notes with tones of rose, jasmine and lily of the valley. Or Bulgarian Signature, Sonnet, Capri, Sha Noar and others. But, of course, the French were considered the most desirable. The bottles have been stored for decades, even long since empty. Let's recall some of them.

One of the most popular fragrances among Soviet women is Fidji. Light, feminine, airy composition of notes of iris, hyacinth, jasmine, violet and rose with the addition of citrus accents and warm woody-musky tones was released by Guy Laroche in 1966. The dream of millions of women is perfect for both daytime use and creating an evening look. Many are still on the lookout for Fidji, but today this Pacific island-inspired eau de toilette is licensed by L'Oreal Corporation.

The climate of the French brand Lancome is a whole era and in some ways a symbol of the 1970s. Being the embodiment of femininity, luxury and charm, this composition has become one of the most desired gifts for a Soviet woman. Remember at least the "Irony of Fate", where Ippolit Matveyevich gives Nadia a bottle of French perfume. This black and white box contained exactly Climat! The film shows the original design in 1967. Only later did the packaging become familiar to us. of blue color. The original composition, created by Gerard Goupy (Gerard Goupy), was based on unforgettable floral-aldehyde chords. Unfortunately, today Climat in its original form is no longer produced. In 2005, Lancome, celebrating its 70th anniversary, brought some fragrances back to life, including Climat. The brand's perfumers tried to recreate the bouquet as closely as possible, but it was too difficult to repeat the charm of the original. The bottle created in the 1960s by artist Georges Delhomme has also undergone changes.

Another legendary creation of Gerard Goupy is an attractive, bewitching, bottomless Magie Noir. Not one woman in the USSR of the 1980s lost her head when she heard the symphony of this magical perfume. The most complex composition of notes of black currant, raspberry, hyacinth, Bulgarian rose, honey, jasmine, tuberose, lily of the valley, daffodil, chords of cedar, musk, sandalwood, vetiver and other undertones, it would seem, is worthy of being a creation of the times of medieval alchemists. But it was then that sorcerers and witches were burned at the stake! Truly, this bouquet is luxurious, like its black glass bottle, the author of which is Pierre Dinan.

A real masterpiece and the standard of the spirits of the oriental family. Scandalous and seductive, provocative and mesmerizing at the same time, Opium, released by the house of Yves Saint Laurent in 1977, was considered by some to be a covert drug propaganda! As conceived by Yves Saint Laurent himself, perfumers Jean-Louis Sieuzac and Jean Amic were to create perfumes worthy of the Chinese Empress Ci Xi herself. A complex, multi-layered interweaving of citrus notes with sensual, spicy chords, animalistic, balsamic and smoky-woody tones is ingenious and unique!

Aroma Yves Saint Laurent -opium

Other iconic compositions

By the way, in the 1970s and 80s, oriental perfumery was held in high esteem not only in the USSR. But in the Soviet Union, among such fragrances, such perfumes as from Christian Dior, Guy Laroche brand, Ispahan from Yves Rocher,

However, it should be said that in the Soviet Union there were fragrances that became popular in the West. One of the clearest examples is, released in 1992 under the brand name of the Soviet fashion designer Vyacheslav Zaitsev. True, this perfume was developed jointly with L’Oreal, but the designer participated in its creation from beginning to end and came up with the name himself.
Maroussia is the name of the mother and granddaughter of Vyacheslav Zaitsev, and it is consonant with the phrase "my Rus'" (ma Russie, fr.). The fragrance triumphantly appeared on the Western market and is of interest to this day. Including in modern Russia. In its intriguing sound, invisible fibers of a whole galaxy of shades are intertwined, among which animalistic, aldehyde, floral, resinous and sweetish facets stand out.
What perfumes do you remember from the Soviet past?

In the last century, during the Soviet era, men exuded almost the same smell, due to the lack of men's perfume as such. There were only a few colognes, which mainly served a sanitary and hygienic function. Men bought colognes that did not hit the pocket and used them after shaving, and some even washed their faces with them.

Wealthier people bought Soviet colognes for men who were becoming fashionable. The most sensational at that time was - "Chipr". It was the best cologne for men in the USSR.

Speaking about the most famous men's cologne of the last century, it should be noted that it appeared in the 60s, thanks to inspired perfumers who, under the impression of Cypriot aromas, beat them and gave the name - "Chypre". It consisted of exotic plants, sandalwood oil and ethyl alcohol.

Quality and durability

Chypre possessed these two main characteristics, since it included:

  • real, Indian sandalwood;
  • bergamot;
  • patchouli;
  • labdanum;
  • oak moss.

A generous gift from India - the USSR in the 50s, were several tanks of the highest quality sandalwood oil, it was enough for several decades of production.

Toward the end of the 80s, Chypre was produced without sandalwood oil, which significantly deteriorated in quality and eventually ceased to be popular. The modern Chypre is not worth discussing at all, since it has nothing to do with the rare original.

Sharpness and masculinity

There was another smell that also has its own history. The well-known Triple Cologne. He is directly related to Napoleon Bonaparte. During military campaigns, the opportunity to perform hygiene procedures was rare, so the French emperor ordered the creation of a remedy with a triple effect:

  • refreshing;
  • hygienic;
  • medical.

In Soviet times, it was consumed like vodka, and brochures of the 18th century became an example for use, they specifically described the benefits. It was necessary to add only 30-50 drops of the elixir to the water to get rid of migraines and heart palpitations. There were other Soviet, men's colognes. One of the cheapest was cologne - "Carnation" - this was suitable for disinfecting wounds and for treating the skin, from mosquitoes, and they also cleaned toothbrushes for disinfection. The colognes "Sasha" and "Russian Forest" also popular at that time had a less sharp aroma.

Table of men's colognes produced in the USSR since the 1930s:

Name of cologne Compound Release years
"Poppies" Jasmine, orange blossom, rose, fresh herbs 1930s
"Carpathians" Woody-musky nuances, needles, mountain flowers, medicinal herbs 1960s
"Zeus" Heliotrope, Clove, Geranium, Coumarin, Sandalwood, Shalbanum, Lavender, Patchouli, Oakmoss, Musk 1980s
"Commander" Lavender, bergamot, orange blossom, tobacco, patchouli, sandalwood, oak moss, amber, musk. 1980s
"Tourist" Oak moss, amber, lemon, herbs, lavender 1970-1971
"Ocean" Tobacco, bergamot, aldehydes, lemon, oakmoss, musk, seaweed, lavender, rose 1960s
"Russian Forest" Pine needles, oakmoss, cedarwood, vetiver, patchouli 1064-1965
"Diplomat" Tobacco, citrus, vetiver, amber, sandalwood, musk 1970s
"Hussar" Vetiver, sandalwood, bergamot, orange, oakmoss, amber, musk, jasmine, rose, lavender, vanillin 1980s
"Hamlet" Saffiano, musk, amber, bergamot, lily of the valley, lavender, citrus 1960s

Men's colognes of the USSR - not full of variety, 4-5 bottles in a specialized place. Nowadays, stores are replete with various boxes and vials. In the USSR, the cost of a good French fragrance was one third of the average salary. The current cost, a few thousand, is an insignificant part of our average salary. It is easy for a modern male representative to purchase almost any fragrance, for a Soviet person it was problematic to find a perfume, there were no such products in public stores.

Photo gallery of colognes of the USSR

French colognes for men of the USSR

Men at that time did not have a large selection of fragrances, and it was completely problematic to purchase French cologne. But, fashionistas of that era, the sensational and not cheap at that time colognes "Consul" and "Commander" helped in this, they were produced by the New Dawn factory, a joint production of the USSR and France. Favorite by those standards was the "Riga Myth" - a fragrance that won thousands of hearts of Soviet women.

Do you like perfumes of the past?

YesNo

Now there is an opportunity to become the owner of the perfumery of the USSR, at online auctions, in specialized stores, as well as among collectors. Men's colognes of the USSR were more accessible. Nowadays, the original Soviet perfumery more expensive than the average, French flavor. Because they were made from better quality components than those that are now. Their production was regulated by the requirements of GOST, because the aroma was of high quality and truly persistent. Bottles released 30-40 years ago still keep their fragrances.

Conclusion

Nowadays, there is an opinion that a man should smell like expensive cognac, a chic cigar, an exquisite aroma, in the USSR, a man smelled like cologne. Now any man to buy a fragrance is as easy as shelling pears. In any store - a choice for every taste and color, different price categories. Therefore, do right choice for yourself, and as a gift, it has become an almost everyday and easily accessible matter.

The times of total scarcity are over, but many people remember the era of colognes with light sadness, and some still keep the smells of past years.

In Soviet and perestroika times, the assortment of perfumes was small: your mother will probably remember 3-4 brands of perfumes that she and all her friends used. Sacrifices had to be made for the sake of the coveted bottle: imported perfumes could cost as much as the average salary of a worker, and it was not easy to buy them.

We have collected 10 of the most popular fragrances from the past that you will be interested to know about.

For the first time, the Climat fragrance was released in 1967 in Paris. And in the 70s in the USSR, he became a real hit and the most desired gift for a Soviet girl. There was a spicy legend that French prostitutes supposedly use these perfumes! Moreover, in the film "Irony of Fate" Hippolyte gives Nadia the same perfume ... Well, after this, how can one not start dreaming about Climat?

Popular

As for the main notes of the fragrance, these are violet, lily of the valley, bergamot, rose, narcissus and sandalwood. By the way, the Lancome brand recently released new version Climat, which sounds very modern and will appeal to many.

"Red Moscow" factory "New Dawn"

This fragrance is perhaps considered the main symbol of the Soviet perfumery past. Now it seems to you that “Red Moscow” can only scare away mosquitoes, but earlier perfumes occupied an honorable place on the shelf of fashionistas.

There is a version that "Red Moscow", first released in 1925, is directly related to pre-revolutionary fragrances. The French perfumer August Michel allegedly created the Empress's Favorite Bouquet perfume especially for Maria Feodorovna, and after the revolution at the Novaya Zarya factory, Krasnaya Moskva was produced on its basis.

This fragrance is based on jasmine, rose and spices. And perfume can also be considered a real “bestseller” (though only because Soviet women had no other choice for a long time): in the early 30s, literally everyone smelled of them, decades later, our mothers found the fragrance, and today it is produced in such the same packaging as 90 years ago.

"Riga Lilac" by Dzintars

If a young man, for financial reasons, did not give his girlfriend “French perfume” (meaning Climat, of course), then he probably chose another, more budgetary hit - “Riga Lilac” by the Latvian brand Dzintars. This fragrance was also in short supply - it was brought exclusively from the Baltic states.

There is probably no need to talk about the key chords - from the name it is clear that these are lilac, lilac and again lilac. Barely perceptible notes of cinnamon, which make the fragrance spicy and “delicious,” give the perfume a special charm.

Opium by Yves Saint-Laurent

The classic fragrance Opium, released in 1977, was the creation of Yves Saint Laurent himself - the master controlled the process of creating perfumes from and to, starting with the perfume composition and ending with the design of the bottle. In Soviet times, only those lucky women who miraculously managed to "snatch" the coveted bottle had Opium: sometimes limited quantities appeared in department stores.

Today, the first version of Opium may seem too harsh and intrusive, but the fragrance has many re-releases for every taste. Classic variant with a pronounced oriental character, it was floral-spicy and with a slightly “medicinal” trail. So, by the way, it was conceived - Saint Laurent was inspired by the aroma of Japanese caskets for storing medicines. And, of course, opium - let's be honest.

J'ai Ose by Guy Laroche

Another perfume that enjoyed special popular love is J'ai Ose, which appeared in 1978. Like Opium, the fragrance belonged to the oriental floral group and was very fashionable. Perfume can rightfully be called legendary: Soviet girls with a demanding taste chose it. Of course, J'ai Ose was also successfully sold in Europe.

The heart of the fragrance is sandalwood, patchouli, orris root, jasmine, vetiver, cedar and rose, while aldehydes, coriander, citrus and peach added an interesting sound to it.

L'Air du Temps by Nina Ricci

Perfume with the legendary cap in the form of soaring doves was once the hallmark of the House of Nina Ricci, and now they occupy a worthy place in the line of fragrances. The brand released L'Air du Temps in 1948, but the perfume appeared in the Soviet Union much later, although it was worth its weight in gold.

Like many perfumes of the time, L'Air du Temps is very rich and quite concentrated. Its most characteristic notes are carnation and iris, which are harmoniously complemented by chords of bergamot, rose and jasmine.

Anais Anais by Cacharel

The delicate floral fragrance Anais Anais, like other imported perfumes, appeared in the USSR shortly after perestroika, although the "decaying West" got to know it much earlier - back in 1978. Be that as it may, our women immediately fell in love with him and for a long time was the most desired gift for March 8th.

Unlike most perfumes of that time, Anais Anais has an unobtrusive and fresh sound. No wonder, because orange, currant, white lily, Moroccan jasmine and "green" shades - this is a very elegant combination.

Chanel no. 5 by Chanel

A timeless classic, a legend, a masterpiece of perfumery - a lot can be said about this famous fragrance. He saw the light in 1921 and is still on sale - such perfume "long-livers" can be counted on the fingers. Many stars have been the faces of the fragrance, from Coco Chanel herself to Nicole Kidman, Audrey Tautou and even Brad Pitt.

In Soviet times, many perfume lovers, of course, heard about these perfumes, but it was almost impossible to get them. That is why, after the restructuring of Chanel No. 5, as a symbol of luxurious life, was a resounding success among Russian women.

Estee by Estee Lauder

Estee Lauder is the first American brand that managed to break into the cosmetics market of the USSR during perestroika. Women were immediately interested in the perfume with the laconic name Estee. And this despite the fact that in the USA it appeared back in 1968! But for Soviet ladies, the fragrance was a hot novelty ...

The floral fragrance is based on aldehyde, coriander, rose, jasmine and iris. And cedar, ylang-ylang and honey are responsible for the interesting original sound... Your mom has great taste!

Mon Parfum by Paloma Picasso

Another popular fragrance used by many women in the 80s is Mon Parfum by Paloma Picasso. This perfume was released by the daughter of the great artist Pablo Picasso, who has been inventing for many years Jewelry for the Tiffany home. But Paloma, like her dad, is a very gifted person, which is why she managed to create a cult product in the world of perfumery. The perfumes that were popular during the Soviet era can still be found on store shelves today, but now instead of Mon Parfum they are simply called Paloma Picasso.

We are sure that you will also like this "mother's" fragrance. The combination of notes of hyacinth, ylang-ylang, bergamot, angelica, rose and citrus is relevant to this day.
