How to decorate volumetric letters. Do-it-yourself letters. How to make volumetric letters with your own hands from various materials. From paper napkins

Today it is very difficult to come up with something completely new in the design solution of an apartment - all styles have been studied and tested. The most unique thing you can stand out with is a hand-made interior detail. In addition, a thing of its own authorship can become an original gift.

Do-it-yourself volumetric letters: choice of material

The production of such decorative elements has already been put on stream, even in the most provincial cities at least 1-2 small companies offer services for the production of three-dimensional letters. And the only difference between them and home-made ones is usually not in the quality of the assembly, but in the selected material. Thanks to a number of tools, you can get a home accessory made of metal or plastic. At home, it is not always possible to produce this, but even the remaining assortment of bases for creativity is extensive.

Even those who have not been fond of needlework before will cope with such a task. Before understanding the intricacies of the process, you have to decide what is the purpose of the gift? To whom is it addressed, and for what reason? Based on the answers, you can decide which material is suitable for the job.

In particular, if a design element is being prepared for a small child - it will decorate a nursery or become a completely functional thing - then the best base for such three-dimensional letters is fabric. It is worth considering plush, velor or even cotton for this purpose.

You can also stuff with trimmings or down, padding polyester or feathers. In this case, the process will become as simple as possible, since, in fact, it will consist only in marking, cutting and a pair of connecting seams. No other action is normally taken here.

If volumetric letters should decorate the interior, first of all, its stylistic orientation is monitored. Depending on what materials prevail in the room where the decor element will be placed, the basis for it is also selected. Most often, wood or plywood is used, as well as thick cardboard. But there is a special demand today for three-dimensional foam letters. Their attractiveness lies in the fact that such a thing is mobile due to its low weight and can be used during photo shoots. For this reason, letters from this material are especially relevant for a wedding.

How to make three-dimensional letters from wood?

Wooden elements are a kind of classic. And when mastering this technique, it will be much easier to deal with the rest. This is especially true of polystyrene, the algorithm of actions with which is very similar.

The first stage of work is to draw stencils on thick cardboard. By the way, such preparation is needed not only when creating wooden letters, but also fabric ones. Using a ruler and a pencil, contours are drawn in compliance with all sizes. These indicators are selected individually. Then cardboard blanks are cut out and applied to the material, which will become the basis for the interior object.

The stencil is also outlined with a pencil, and then the shape is cut along these lines with an electric jigsaw. Next, you have to go through the places of the cut sandpaper, diligently smoothing these zones. And only then the decor element is processed with paint or decorated with other materials. For example, it is wrapped with thick colored threads or pasted over with a cloth.

  • As mentioned above, styrofoam has to be worked in much the same way as wood. In the 1st turn - draw and cut stencils. With their help, it will be easiest to transfer the contours to the material and cut out the desired shape. Cutting on polystyrene is also carried out with a jigsaw, but a simple shoe knife can also be used. He will be able to cope with the task no worse than an electrical appliance.
  • Grinding foam can be done with the same sandpaper. To achieve maximum smoothness, it is worth alternating its abrasiveness: start with large grains and end with small ones. Since the material initially looks unsightly, its initial design is made with plain white paper, which sits on rubber glue. It is this type that is best chosen for polystyrene, since it does not have the ability to corrode its surface. Finally, the product is dyed and dried, and then decorated according to the chosen design.
  • A little trick that will help you create letters that are as similar in style and size as possible: choose the appropriate font from those available in the computer database and print each letter on a sheet of the desired format. It is much easier to work with this stencil than to draw it by hand.

Fabric Basics

Soft three-dimensional letters made of fabric are often also a very functional thing. After all, they can serve as a pillow, especially if they are created for a child's room. In this case, their size is usually selected taking into account the convenience of use in everyday life and is approximately equal to the parameters of a classic sofa cushion. The material is selected, as in other cases, depending on the interior.

Here again, the first step is to work with stencils, after which the contours are transferred to the wrong side of the fabric. Letters are cut out with the obligatory preservation of the free edge: otherwise, when sewing, they will decrease in size. The halves of each letter are folded with the right sides inward, swept and sewn. The latter is done in such a way that there is one untouched section 1.5-2 cm long. Through it, the product will be turned outward, and then it will begin to be stuffed with the material selected for this.

In the final, this zone is passed with a hidden seam. In addition, you can leave one of the sides unsewn and insert a “zipper” into it. Such a move will allow you to remove the filler in order to send the letter pillow for cleaning.

Volumetric letters for a wedding: design secrets

For wedding details of the interior, from which photography is often carried out, the moment of attachment is important. The letters should stand upright, which implies the presence of thin legs.

The idea with a disguised compartment in the form of a pocket deserves mention, which will come in handy if the decor element is being prepared as a gift. Small gifts can easily fit into such a cache.

The original version of the design - adding backlight. The easiest way to do this is to braid the letters with an ordinary thin garland with small light bulbs, securing it with tape. But this will only work indoors, because you need an outlet. And you can buy an LED strip that can work mobile.

You can decorate the surface of the letters with any material. It is worth trying to embroider patterns on the fabric if they are not lost against the background of your own patterns of textile material. Moreover, this can be done not only with colored threads up to floss, but also with the use of beads, large beads, glass beads. No less painstaking, but skillful work is the creation of a drawing using rhinestones planted on glue. True, such a move requires a lot of time and effort.

For elements made of wood or foam plastic, the decor possibilities are even greater. Mesh, foil, and fabric are suitable here. In addition, you can simply paint the surface with paints, subsequently fixing the result with varnish. The most original ideas are considered to be decoration with shells, small crushed glass or pebbles, cereals. If they are tightly sprinkled on a surface previously treated with glue, and then filled with paint with a metallic effect, you will get an unusual relief and a futuristic effect.

Abroad, it is quite popular to use letters in interior design, which can be hung on ribbons, placed on shelves, etc. You can also add names or any phrases from them, or you can randomly “scatter” them on the wall to decipher anagrams. Recently, such three-dimensional letters have begun to be used for photo shoots and decorating the festive hall. Today we offer you to make such letters yourself from an unnecessary cardboard box.

To make volumetric letters you will need:

Corrugated cardboard (you can use an old box);
- design paper;
- regular and double-sided tape;
- ruler, pencil, cutter;
- marking board;
- decorative elements (ribbon, rhinestones, buttons, etc.).

Volumetric letters from cardboard step by step:

Take a cardboard sheet and draw a simple letter on it, without roundness. Then cut out the letter with scissors/paper cutter in duplicate (Pic 1). The cut out letter will look like in photo 2.

Make sides on one letter, for which cut strips of cardboard about 7 cm wide and as long as possible. Cut them into pieces so that it is enough for the entire perimeter of the letter. Bend 2 cm allowances on both sides and glue to these allowances along a strip of double-sided tape. Then glue the resulting "sides" to the part of the "letter" (photo 3).

Glue the second cardboard letter to the sides and press firmly, but try not to bend the corrugated cardboard (photo 4-5). From above, you can fix it with strips of double-sided tape (photo 6).

Start decorating the letter. Trace it onto the design paper and roughly figure out how to cut out to cover the letter on all sides (its entire surface). The wrapper for the letter may not work the first time - it's okay, try again (Pic 7-9).

HOW TO MAKE A VOLUMETRIC LETTER WITH YOUR HANDS Increasingly, you can see unusual decor elements in the interior - letters or whole inscriptions from them. Naturally, many construction and design firms immediately picked up this idea and started producing such jewelry. But more interesting, valuable and significant are those decorative accessories that are made independently, and it is not so difficult to make them. Naturally, it is impossible to make jewelry from metal or plastic without equipment, but there are many materials that are quite affordable and easy to process. From what and how to make a three-dimensional letter with your own hands so that it is unique and inimitable, which means that it favorably distinguishes your home, we will describe below. Textiles The most common way to make three-dimensional letters with your own hands is to make them from fabric and filler. For those who are at least a little familiar with a sewing machine or even a thread and a needle, it will not be a particular problem to make soft letters. They can be small size, when for decoration they are strung on a thread or fishing line and words are composed, or large when they are used as floor pillows. But the most popular size of such products is considered the average size, like normal sofa cushions. How to make a three-dimensional letter with your own hands from textiles To make three-dimensional letters from textiles with your own hands, you need to: - choose a fabric that matches the general style of the room, - make a stencil of the required letters, - transfer the stencil using cardboard to the fabric, - cut out two blanks (note that, on the one hand, the stencil should be applied directly, and on the other, in a mirror image, i.e. turning over), - sew them in the most primitive way. This can be done by hand or on a typewriter, depending on your sewing skills. As the letter is sewn together, the free space in it is stuffed with scraps of fabric, foam rubber, synthetic winterizer or cotton wool. It is worth choosing a sufficiently strong fabric and threads so as not to often repair such a letter. You can connect the fabric with any kind of seams, leaving them outside or inside, simultaneously turning the letter inside out. You can decorate such pillows in different ways: sew on buttons, lace, glue various butterflies, pebbles or flowers. For children, you can "revive" these letters by gluing their eyes, nose, tongue, hair and marking the arms and legs with the help of threads. The design of the finished pillow is full scope for your imagination. CardboardIn various ways, you can make letters from cardboard with your own hands. This will also require a stencil with the letter of the exact font that you would like to see on your shelf or wall. As a tip for beginners, it's worth noting that it's best to choose a simple, classic-style sans-serif font. When it becomes easy to get this option, you can move on to decorative fonts or a serif font. After making a stencil, it is used to transfer the image onto a thick thick paper , plain or corrugated cardboard. And then the manufacturing technology may differ. The first method is somewhat simpler: to make volumetric letters from cardboard with your own hands, it is enough to wrap them with woolen or other thick threads. Then you can decorate such accessories with flowers knitted from the same threads, shells, pebbles or beads. The second option is somewhat more complicated, but the result is not soft, but real classic letters that will decorate both classic and minimalist interiors. To do this, you also need to prepare letter stencils and cut out two parts. If there are holes in the letters, they need to be cut with a clerical knife, and then cut out with scissors. For the edge of the product, you need to cut a strip of cardboard, which should be three to four centimeters thicker than the thickness of the product. Using the pen where the ink ran out, we push through the fold lines with which the parts will be connected. Next, you need to bend the cardboard along these lines. Then one part is glued to the edge of the product (to make it more convenient to glue, in that part of the letter where the lines are smooth, the fold of the edge should often be cut with scissors). After connecting the first part of the letter with the edge, the second part is glued in the same way. The whole product is placed under the press for a while (a couple of hours is quite enough). After making a letter from cardboard with your own hands, you need to decorate it. You can paste over the cardboard on top with white paper - such a letter will fit into a minimalist design. Or you can make the letter brighter: sprinkle glitter over a layer of glue, use beads, shells, bows, gift ribbons, wrapping paper, etc. In order for the letter to fit a certain style of interior or to individual pieces of furniture, you can paint it yourself. It is in this way that the letters used on holidays are created. At anniversaries, these can be numbers, at weddings - the names of the newlyweds or the individual words “Love”, “Happiness”, etc. The third way to make any shapes, including letters or numbers, using cardboard and paper is the papier-mâché technique. To do this, you first need to draw a word or letter in duplicate, and then fasten them together so that they are at an equal distance from each other. Some craftsmen fill this space with paper cups, gluing the top and bottom of each cup and thereby holding the two pieces together. You can use cardboard of the same length for gluing parts. On top of this, the product is pasted over with cut pieces of paper or newspapers, as is usually done in the papier-mâché technique. The finished item can be decorated with painting, appliqué, or use the decoupage technique. These will look original unusual jewelry like pasta in the form of shells or stars. Wood Another popular material for creating letters and inscriptions is wood. Do-it-yourself wooden letters can be made from blocks of wood or plywood, which is much easier. True, plywood letters will turn out to be flat, but with the help of decorations, for example, natural material(cones, acorns, etc.), it is easy to give them extra volume. To make wooden letters with your own hands, you also need a stencil. It is transferred to plywood, and then cut out with a jigsaw. After the product is ready, it is worth treating it with sandpaper so that there are no bumps and splinters. Such letters are usually first painted and then decorated with any materials. After finishing work, it is better to varnish the product so that the tree is protected from moisture. Styrofoam If you have enough material, you can make letters from foam with your own hands. Styrofoam can be bought at the store in sheets or you can find boxes from household appliances, where there is often quite a lot of it. The technology for making beech from it is the same as for wooden letters: first, using a stencil, the image is transferred to a sheet of foam, then the product is cut with a jigsaw (you can use a construction knife), and then it is carefully processed with fine sandpaper so that there are no defects, and the surface is perfectly flat. When decorating foam plastic letters with their own hands, they usually first apply two layers of paint to all surfaces of the product, and then use light decorations: lace, tulle trimmings, burlap, threads, etc. To decorate a letter from foam, you can make small flowers, ladybugs, butterflies or other accessories with your own hands, but you should not stick them on a glue moment. It can corrode the foam. It is better to use rubber glue - it is safe for the product. Wine corks Another option on how to make a three-dimensional letter with your own hands is a product made from wine corks. IN modern world nothing is surprising anymore, but using so-called waste to create interesting things is a great idea. Corks can be glued together with regular or super glue. You can change the direction of the plugs by gluing them first with ribs, and then directly. They decorate similar products with paints, appliqué, dried flowers and in any other ways. Gypsum You can use gypsum to create interior three-dimensional letters with your own hands. It is better to work with plaster with gloves. To create letters from plaster, you need to prepare a form into which the prepared solution will be poured. To do this, you need to draw the desired letters on cardboard, and then cut out long strips that are equal to the thickness of the product. These strips must be glued to the cardboard along the contours of the letters to form a cavity into which the gypsum is to be poured. Inside the form, it is desirable to glue it with adhesive tape - this way it will be easier to get the part after it hardens. For the preparation of gypsum, strictly follow all the recommendations on the package. It should usually have the consistency of yogurt. First, the form is half-filled with a solution. Then a layer of burlap is laid on top for the strength of the future product. Then the product is filled to the end, i.e. to the top of the form. Gypsum usually hardens completely after 4-5 hours. After that, you need to use a knife to get the product out of the mold. Then the surface is sanded with sandpaper, corners are cut and irregularities are removed. Usually such letters are not decorated, but left white. But not necessarily: they can be covered with paint, also decorated with some cute little things. To prevent such decorations from getting dirty, they should be sprinkled with acrylic spray. You can also mention the creation of letters for the interior from salt dough, which you can do with your children. Some cast letters from wax, creating chic candles. Those who are fond of modeling are quite capable of making letters from clay. There are really many options for creating unique decor elements. By decorating such products with an LED strip or an ordinary New Year's garland, you can create a creative lamp for the bedroom, and by placing small three-dimensional fabric letters on a large canvas, you can get chic panel. Show your imagination - and you will be able to unusually decorate your home! Comfort to your home!

The popularity of three-dimensional letters in the interior or inscriptions from them is growing more and more. Because of this, many design and construction companies began to provide the service of such decoration. But of course, it is much better and more interesting to make such letters yourself, especially since the manufacturing process is not very complicated.

Of course, this does not apply to working on plastic or metal, they require special equipment. But there are many materials that are quite suitable for self-processing. We will consider them and methods for making such letters with our own hands that can advantageously decorate your apartment in this article.

Textile

The most popular material for making letters with your own hands is fabric and its filler. If you have at least minimal skills in working with a needle and thread or with a sewing machine, then it will not be difficult for you to make soft letters. They can be made small if they are then strung on a fishing line, or a thread to make words and large if you decide to get a floor pillow in this form. The most common is the option of sofa cushions with an average size.

When working on making letters with your own hands, you will need to follow these steps:

Choose the most suitable fabric for the interior,
- make a stencil for future letters,
- transfer it to the fabric, helping yourself with a piece of cardboard,
- make a pair of blanks (moreover, on the one hand, you need to attach the stencil directly, on the other hand, it must be turned over, that is, placed in a mirror image),
- then sew them together in the most elementary way.

This can be done with sewing machine either by hand. You need to fill the volume between pieces of fabric with padding polyester, fabric scraps, cotton wool or foam rubber. Use the most durable materials so that in the future you do not have to often resort to repairing the final result.

You can sew the fabric in a variety of ways, the seams can be left inside or outside, while turning the product inside out. You can decorate it with lace, pebbles, buttons, butterflies or flowers. If you want to please the children, then glue the tongue, eyes, hair, nose to it and make symbolic legs and arms with threads. At the final stage, you can not limit your imagination.

Cardboard

DIY cardboard letters can be made in a variety of ways. To this end, you need to keep a stencil on hand, where the letter will be depicted with the font that you want to see on the wall or shelf. For beginners, it is best for this purpose to choose a classic font, devoid of serifs. When you have already mastered this skill, you can move on to more original fonts. Using a stencil, transfer the image to corrugated or plain cardboard, thick thick paper. Then wrap the cardboard blank with woolen or other thick threads. Then decorate the result with flowers from the same threads, pebbles, shells or beads.

There is a second way to get letters from cardboard, it is more difficult, but using it you can make full-fledged, and not just soft products. So, with a little more effort, you can qualitatively decorate both a minimalist and a classic interior. To do this, you also need to make stencils and cut out a couple of parts. If you want to make a letter with holes, then cut them with a clerical knife, and then cut them out with scissors. For the ribs, cut out a cardboard strip, it should be three to four centimeters thicker than the letter itself. Now take a pen without ink, and push through the fold lines along which the parts will be connected. Bend the cardboard over them. Glue the part to the edge of the letter (to make this step more convenient, cut along the fold of the edge in the part of the product where the lines are smooth). After you glue the rib and the first part of the product, do the same with the second part. Then place the letter under the press for two hours.

Then you can start decorating. finished product made by hand. If your interior is made in the style of minimalism, then just paste over it with white paper. And to make the letter brighter, decorate it with sequins, shells, gift ribbons, beads, wrapping paper, gift ribbons and other materials. You can also cover it with paints to make it more suitable for individual pieces of furniture or for a specific style of interior design.

In this more complex method, letters are made to decorate the holidays. In the case of celebrating weddings, they can put the words “Happiness”, “Love” and others, as well as the names of the spouses. In the case of anniversaries, there may also be not letters, but numbers made using the same technique. There is another way to make numbers and letters from cardboard - this is papier-mâché. To make a product using this technique, make a drawing of what you have in mind in the amount of two pieces, and connect them to each other. Some do this for this: they take paper cups and grease their tops and bottoms with glue. You can also take pieces of cardboard of the same size for gluing. Then paste over the product with newspapers or pieces of paper and decorate with appliqué, painting, or using decoupage.

Tree

Another fairly common material for making letters is wood. The easiest way to do this is to use bars of it or plywood. It should only be remembered that in order for the plywood letter to turn out to be voluminous, it will need to be decorated, for example, with acorns or cones. When production begins, you will also need a stencil. Transfer it to a piece of plywood and cut it out with a jigsaw. Go over the resulting letter with sandpaper to get rid of splinters and bumps. After that, it can be covered with paint and decorated with some materials. Then make it moisture resistant by varnishing.

Styrofoam

If you have enough material, you can make your own styrofoam letters. You can find it either in specialized stores or in equipment boxes. Letters are made from it, just like from wood. Transfer, using a stencil, the drawing to the foam, and then cut it out with a construction knife or jigsaw. Now take a fine skin, smooth it out and clean the product. When decorating such letters on your own, you must first cover them with two layers of paint. After that, you can cover it with tulle, burlap, lace, threads and other materials. Plus, you can decorate the letters with handmade ladybugs, small flowers, butterflies, etc. In no case do not use Moment glue for this, it is detrimental to foam. Take rubber glue for this.

Gypsum

Also, gypsum can be suitable for making letters with your own hands. Just stock up on gloves for this. Make a mold into which you will need to pour the solution. Make a drawing of the letters on a piece of cardboard and cut out long strips that will be equal in thickness to the letter. Stick them along the contours on cardboard, because of this you will get a cavity that will need to be filled with plaster. Before this, it is best to cover the cavity with tape so that there are no particular difficulties when removing the part when it hardens. When kneading gypsum, strictly follow the manufacturer's recommendations indicated on the container.

A properly made solution will most likely be similar in consistency to yogurt. Fill them out half way. Lay a piece of burlap on top, and then pour the solution all the way to the top. Wait 4-5 hours for the mortar to harden. Take a knife and use it to remove the plaster from the mold. Go over it with sandpaper to remove bumps and extra corners.

In most cases, after this, work on plaster letters is completed. If you don't want to, you can paint them, as well as decorate with some small details. Coat them with acrylic spray to avoid contamination.
